In Celebration of

Nan Curtis (nee Scott)

February 26, 1936 -  August 16, 2017

Peacefully, with her family by her side, on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Toronto Western Hospital, at the age of 81. Beloved wife of 58 years to Clive – her best friend, devoted partner and greatest love. Cherished mother of Jenefer, Sara and the late David. Daughter of Dr. Charles & Janet Scott (nee Bishop). Sister to Dr. David Scott (Huda) of Orangeville, Rev. Charles Scott (Sharon) of Comox, B.C. and the late Jean Ernst. Loving Grandma to Olivia and Sam.

It’s hard to express just how much Mom touched all who knew her. As a wife, mother, sister and friend, she was talented, gracious and wise, teaching by example the importance of positivity, courage, laughter and kindness. She was a unique combination of both strength and grace, and her soft-spoken but independent nature will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A graduate of the University of Guelph’s (Macdonald Institute) Household Sciences program, her professional career included working for the Consumer’s Gas Company in the early 60s and as a food stylist for the Yan Can Cook television show in in the 70s. She embraced her profession and created a beautiful and loving home where she was in her element as a hostess for many friends and relatives. These gatherings were among her happiest times. Others included downtime at Cawaja Beach every August and at the family property just north of her hometown of Orangeville; Friday night dates with Dad at King Henry VIII pub in the Kingsway; hard work and fun with her unit group and the “Featured Flea” ladies at Kingsway Lambton United Church; twice-weekly sessions with her Tai Chi comrades; visiting with her cherished Mac ‘59 classmates; and walking with hundreds of other Canadians in the Parkinson’s Superwalk. (She and Dad were among the top five Superwalk fundraisers in Canada for the last several years.)

She faced her 1998 Parkinson’s diagnosis with courage and her hallmark gentle spirit, seeing each new day as a gift. Above all, she never forgot the importance of laughter.

The family would like to extend our deep gratitude to the 4th Floor staff at the Runnymede Healthcare Centre and the dedicated team at Toronto Western. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada, or a charity of your choice.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. on Thursday, August 24, from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Kingsway Lambton United Church, 85 The Kingsway, Toronto, on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception at the church. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca

A truly remarkable person. I don't think I ever saw Nan without that big beautiful smile on her face. Through life's ups & downs, she always had a kind word and a gracious greeting. Many's a time when Clive & I would sit in a boat fishing, his love for Nan would shine through - in his eyes, his words & his gestures.
Her dignified health battles should be legendary and she never let life's challenges get her down.
I consider it a privilege to have know Nan for many years and will miss that beaming smile and positive attitude. Rest peacefully Nan - you deserve it.

We wish we could be there to celebrate Nan's life. She was lovely --gracious, wise, and approachable. We have enjoyed getting to know her in recent years. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you for whom the loss of Nan is greatest. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Nan was a candle of inspiration to all of us who knew her.

Her quiet but firm approach to life was invalid. A gentle soft voice embrassed everything she approached in life.

We laughed, cried, planned together. Fond memories will get us through this sad time. RIP dear friend.

Nan was a very special person with her quiet humour and good word for everyone. We often joked about sharing the last names when we married. Please accept my sincere sympathy.

Clive, Sara, and family - it was with great sadness that I learned of Nan's passing. So many warm memories from our Unit 1 activities and the Flea Market week of work & fun, particularly Nan's management of the "Featured Fleas".
Unfortunately, we are out of town with our family and will not be able to attend Nan's service. But my heart will be there ! With love, Suzie
