In Celebration of

Milan Kalis

December 10, 1942 -  July 22, 2025

Milan Josef Kalis (Mike) passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. His passing marks the close of a remarkable life defined by quiet strength, deep devotion, and enduring kindness.

Those who knew Milan understood that while he was a man of few words, his actions spoke volumes. His life was defined by resilience, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

Born in České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia, on December 10, 1942, Milan’s early years were shaped by perseverance and hope. In 1968, after the Soviet occupation, he made the courageous decision to leave his homeland in search of freedom and safety. With courage in his heart and hope for a better future, he journeyed to Canada—a country that welcomed him with open arms and became his true home.

After a brief time in Cap Rouge, Quebec, where he met his beloved wife Ilja (née Sanda), Milan settled in Toronto and earned a Master of Engineering in aeronautics from the University of Toronto. His professional journey included roles at De Havilland, Holderbank and St Marys Cement before he founded Demitec Limited. Through his leadership and deep expertise in mechanical engineering and industrial maintenance, Milan built a highly respected career making meaningful contributions to every team and project he touched.

Above all, Milan was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, son and brother. He is survived by his loving wife, Ilja; his children, Dennis (Kirsten Midgley) and Ellen (Robert Brenneman); and his cherished grandchildren, Jax, Ellie, Claire, and Olivia, who brought him endless joy and pride.

Family was the heart of Milan’s life. He found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures of being together—whether on family vacations to the beach or the mountains, or in the everyday moments shared with loved ones. Summers on Georgian Bay were especially sacred to him. The cottage he built with his own hands became a cherished gathering place, where laughter echoed, stories were passed down, and memories were made with family and friends. It was there, surrounded by nature and those he loved most, that Milan found his deepest sense of peace, purpose, and belonging.

A private family funeral will be held on July 25, 2025. A celebration of Milan’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and extended family will be invited to gather, share memories, and honour a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada at https://donate.parkinson.ca, in honour of Milan’s memory and the strength with which he faced life’s challenges.

It was a honour & pleasure to know Mike for the past twenty years. He made us feel welcome into the Kalis family.
Mike was an interesting man to get to know as he found ways to accomplish projects he worked on for family. We had many interesting visits over the years of our friendship.
Our condolences to the entire Ksalis family.
May you rest in peace Mike.

Milan was strong mentally and physically. He was an excellent example for me to follow.

My friendship with Milan goes way back to 1968. Ever since we shared so many great memories, later enriched by our children, grandchildren and the Georgian Bay island -

My deepest condolences to you Dennis, Ellen and your mom. I have fond memories of Christmas with your family in Whistler and your Dad suffering terribly after attempting snowboarding for his first time in his mid 50’s. This attempt tells you something about his spirit. I know you made many memories with your Dad and I hope you find some comfort in those. ❤️
