January 31, 2022
Milan Savic was born in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia on September 23, 1933, to Swetolik & Radmila Savic. Orphaned at the age of six during WWII, the Red Cross placed him on farms where he was to work hard as a farm hand in Vrnjacka Banja. His bed was a barnyard where he slept with the animals. It was a humble beginning where he worked more as a slave, living barefoot and going to bed hungry. At the age of fourteen he was finally found by his mother’s sister, who brought him back to Belgrade to be reunited by his family of six sisters and brother. He completed his schooling and then military service in Pula followed by his machine rebuilder education in Kragujevac. He was attracted by the allure of starting a new adventure and made his escape from ex-Yugoslavia in 1957 with great opposition, obstacles, and sacrifice. Landing in an Austrian holding camp it was here that after a year, he was able to secure a place on a boat to North America. Despite the empty pockets and air-conditioned shoes, his strong determination persevered, and he began his Canadian journey in Montreal, Quebec on April 14, 1958. Montreal is where new friendships developed, a strong connection to his culture and church grew roots. It’s also where he met his wife Erika, became a business owner, and where his children were born. In pursuit of stability, he moved his business to Mississauga, and this is where he would live out his final days. Milan was artistic and appreciated art in many forms. He loved music and dance, reading, photography, and cooking. Food was as important as breathing and only the best. He enjoyed soccer and tennis. He was always on top of the political culture and well informed for a quick debate. He was known for his many proverbs and he loved animals and nature. Friends enjoyed his company for his charm, charisma, and effervescence. A generous soul that supported the church, community, country, family, and friends. He loved his wife deeply and passionately as he loved life itself. His children were his creation that he loved and treasured, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Every man has two deaths when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name. In some ways men can be immortal.”― Ernest Hemingway
We will keep his memory alive and keep speaking his name.
