In Celebration of

Mieczyslaw "Mike" Zelma

January 1, 1915 -  December 9, 2017

Mieczyslaw Zelma was born in Omule, Poland on January 1, 1915. He was the second of 8 children. His parents, Vincenty and Maria (nee Licznerska) Zelma owned a large farm and all the children helped with the farm. He joined the army and was stationed in Torun until 1939. He was a P.O.W. in Germany during World War II. Afterwards, he came to Canada in 1950. He worked in the northern Ontario lumber camps near Thunder Bay until 1953 when he came to Toronto. He then worked at the Royal York hotel (which was the tallest building in Toronto at that time). He went back to Poland to visit his family where he met and married Krystyna Kociolek on August 24, 1958. His new bride joined him in Canada where they bought a house on Fermanagh Avenue in the Polish community, close to St. Casimir’s church which they attended every week. They had 2 sons, Henry (1960) and Stan (1962). Mieczyslaw worked hard at Smith Transport until he retired in 1980. Their grandchildren were born in 1991 (Kasia), 1993 (Michael) and 1997 (Karolinka). Sadly, Krystyna passed away in 2014 after being together for 56 years. Mieczyslaw came to live at Copernicus Lodge in June of 2015 at the age of 100! He credits his longevity to always being active, physically and mentally. The Zelma family misses both Mieczyslaw and Krystyna Zelma dearly.
