In Celebration of

Michael Alexander Wood

June 6, 1979 -  August 11, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Alexander Wood who has been taken from us far too soon, age 41.

Michael was the beloved son of Marcia Swaby and David Wood. The adored grandson of Pamela Swaby; beloved partner of Lynda; treasured nephew of Suzanne Hague (John) and Peter Wood (Kim). Cousins to Chris (Amanda) and Matthew (Matt) Hague, Paul, Joanne and Hannah Wood. Michael has left a hole in our hearts along with the hearts of his many friends and extended family in Jamaica, Cayman, the UK and the USA, with whom he kept in constant contact and who provided him with love and comfort in his last days.

Michael will be remembered for his enormous zest for life and his sense of adventure. As a young man he spent many fun-filled summers in the Cayman Islands visiting his grandmother where he learned to SCUBA dive, enjoyed fishing, eating conch, lobsters and crabs. In later years he became “Grannie’s travelling companion” as they both escaped winter.

Growing up in Oakville and then Calgary, he thrilled at the rush of skiing in the Rockies, racing down the hills at Sunshine, Banff and Lake Louise at breath-taking speed. This fearlessness was also witnessed in his love of fast cars and even faster motorcycles; he loved the freedom of the open road and thought nothing of riding from Ontario to BC.

On the contemplative side Michael loved nature and animals; he was generous and kind often giving flowers and plants which he cultivated as gifts. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his beloved dog Alex who was a constant companion.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions a private celebration of Michael’s life will take place by invitation only.

In lieu of flowers we are asking those who wish to remember Michael to make a donation to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada; www.crohnsandcolitis.ca.

Rest in peace Michael, you are forever locked in our hearts.

Dear Marcia, Dave, Lady Pamela & Suzanne,
There are no words to express our heartfelt condolences in the sudden loss of your beloved Michael. Carisa and I remember Michael's early childhood very well as our kids grew up together and attended swimming lessons and birthday parties. May Michael's soul rest in peace and his adventurous spirit continue with no more pain and hindrances!

Although I did not know Michael well, I took an interest in him whenever our paths crossed. We last met in 2014 at a Swaby family gathering in Silver Sands Jamaica .He was lost in the compound and I was able to walk with him back to the house where he was staying.

More recently we reconnected via a Swaby What's App group and when Michael asked for suggestions for a name for his new motorbike, the previous one called Falcon, I believe, I suggested Magpie as the bike was black and white.. To my delight Michael too liked the name and Magpie it was.

Rest in peace dear Michael. You will have joined your grandfather Alva to enjoy fishing together.

Christine
