In Celebration of
Michael (Mikey) Patrick McRae
April 22, 1966 -
July 27, 2023
It is with immense sadness that we share that Michael Patrick McRae, born April 22, 1966, in Toronto, Ontario, passed away on July 27, 2023 - he was 57-years young. Those that loved him called him Mikey, so this will be written as such.
Mikey married his sweetest boo-boo Heather (nee Mallon) 33-years ago; and, shortly thereafter they joyfully brought two kids into the world, Michael and Hannah - two humans whom Mikey could not have loved more, nor been prouder of. He didn't always have to say it in words, because you knew and saw and felt how deeply and fiercely devoted he was to his beloved family.
Mikey has had tools in his hands and a hard hat on his head since he could walk - forever his dad's shadow when it came to fixing this and fixing that; little Mikey-boy was often given the job of holding the loose screws in his little hands that when opened, would always be empty. Some men are born with an instinct for knowing how things work, and what to do when they break ‒ and Mikey, well, he always knew just what to do.
Likely one of the most infamous and skilled Zamboni licensed drivers to ever have lived, Mikey drove hundreds of circles around the ice rink, always with a side-eye on his little brother Chrissy-baby as he tried to corral and shoo him off the ice, so he could continue to work his ice re-surfacing and cleaning magic. We will forever see him up there on that machine ‒ focused and proud, glimmering eyes and his legendary smirk.
An avid sportsman, Mikey loved playing baseball and hockey - but he admittedly loved it even more when he stood in the coach's box for both Hannah and Michael's teams. His outdoor adventure skills were unearthed during his boy scout days. He had a tender fondness for flowers and nature in general ‒ some of his happiest and most peaceful moments were spent at Harvey, the camper, with Heather, Simba and Beauregard.
Mikey has been building things his whole life and worked in the construction industry his entire career. Steady, loyal, and most definitely the hardest working hard-hat-wearing human, ever. He worked above and below ground, close to home and far away. He loved his work passionately - and whatever he was creating he created with his whole heart. We know his colleagues, especially from Eastern Construction, will miss him dearly.
Mikey was the 2nd born of five children to Michael (Papa) and Tricia (Dooda) McRae; a little brother to Margie, and big brother to Chris, Mary Lynn and Sherry. Five kids in 8-years made the McCrazie household just that, crazy ‒ crazy busy, crazy loud; but mostly they are known for how madly, deeply, crazy they LOVE.
Pre-deceased by his besties Ebony and father-in-law George, we are certain they are already up to quiet mischief, and most definitely already fixing a few things in heaven.
The care Mikey received in the last days of his life was extraordinary. The nurses and doctors and entire Critical Care team at St. Joseph Hamilton compassionately and reverently cared for him - they are truly angels in running shoes and made Mikey's last moments, grace-filled and soft-hearted - just like Mikey would want and just like Mikey was.
This is where the obituary ends, but this is not where Mikey, his colossal heart and his legacy ends. We will all miss you ferociously Mikey, but we know that we will see you again - and, what a glorious celebration that will be. Love you forever & ever & ever & ever & ever.
