In Celebration of

Michael Edwards

January 15, 1935 -  March 31, 2018

Michael John Shapland Edwards, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31st, 2018 at Toronto General Hospital surrounded by his family. Born Jan 15th, 1935 in Ewenny, Glamorgan, Wales, he was the son of Dorothy (Doughty) and Thomas Edwards.

When Mike was ten, his family moved to Guildford, England and it was here that he met his wife, Jennifer. Shortly before their wedding in 1957, Mike joined the British Royal Air Force as an Acting Pilot Officer. It was while completing his National Service for the RAF that Mike first came to Canada, instilling in him a love for travel and adventure. He returned to England and soon embarked on a long career in the mining industry as a project manager and mining engineer. This would take him and his young family all over the world, working in the UK, Canada, Jamaica, Iran, the US, South Africa and Russia.

Mike had a great love of the outdoors and spent his spare time walking, hiking and biking. He was an avid reader and could not pass by a bookstore without stopping in to browse, rarely coming out empty handed. He also sailed and played rugby, continuing to follow Wales once his playing days were over. Ten years ago, he began attending an International Biophysical Economics Conference, hosted annually by the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He felt extremely honored to be asked to present his own papers at several of these, including the conference to be held later this year.

Although his home was in Canada, his heart was in Wales and he took every opportunity to return to the countryside there. These trips would also take him back to Guildford where, as an alumnus, he would regularly attend reunions at the Royal Grammar School (a school founded in 1509 and granted a Royal Charter by King Edward VI in 1552).

Mike is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jennifer; three children; Richard (Kai), Deborah, Melanie (John) and four grandchildren; Dylan, Shea, Jack and Kai. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ted.

Following cremation, a private memorial was held on Tuesday, April 10th at Turner and Porter Funeral Home in Toronto. Mike's ashes will be returned to the Llanthony Valley in Wales.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 28th. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at 44 Edgehill Rd. in Etobicoke.

The family would like to thank the wonderful teams at Toronto Western and Toronto General Hospitals for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Campaign at Toronto General Hospital.

Mike was a wonderful man, a loving father and husband, and I know you will all miss him so very much. I’ll remember the fun and fascinating conversations I had with him. He always had something he was working on and a tale to tell about it! Much love to you all.

My heart goes out to the Edwards family. I have wonderful memories of the generous hospitality at their home in Crescent Beach. I have always felt warmly welcomed whenever I was part of a family gathering. With my deepest condolences.

Most people do not know this, but my father was a very sentimental man. He got teary listening to music, he cried at my daughter's piano recitals, and became emotional watching sad movies. I have a great memory of the two of us watching the Oscars in 1994. It ran late but we had to watch it to the end - which was around 1:00 in the morning. This was the Oscars that Tom Hanks received his award for his role in Philadelphia and then made that memorable acceptance speech. We were holding it together pretty well until we hear Tom Hanks say these words "....the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names. They number a thousand for each one of the red ribbons that we wear tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all. A healing embrace that cools their fevers, that clears their skin, and allows their eyes to see the simple, self-evident common sense truth that is made manifest by the benevolent creator of us all and was written down on paper by wise men, tolerant men, in the city of Philadelphia two hundred years ago...." My dad and I look at each other and burst out laughing - we both have tears streaming down our faces! I would have many occasions after that night to see him with tears in his eyes, but this memory has stayed with me.
