It is with deep sadness and heartfelt reflection that we announce the passing of Merril “Squirrel” Currie, a man who lived life to the fullest, embracing every adventure and cherishing the love of his family. He passed away peacefully on October 4th, 2024 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and cherished memories.
He is survived by his beloved wife Theresa Currie, his son Thomas Currie (Leslie), his daughter Tracy Currie (Lloyd), and his grandchildren: Thomas Currie, Jordan Currie, and Davis Newman. His family was the center of his world, and the love and pride he held for each of them was evident in every moment he shared with them.
In his younger years, he found excitement and purpose while on his vacation time working for Hands Chemicals, traveling across Canada for National Exhibitions. From Vancouver to Calgary to Toronto, he made a name for himself, setting off fireworks that lit up the skies and left lasting memories in the hearts of many.
Though he did not complete high school, his passion for learning never waned. His work took him to Japan, where he was captivated by the rich culture, the warmth of its people, and the beauty of the land. He loved immersing himself in Japan's traditions, and his travels there held a special place in his heart.
He was an avid traveler and had the opportunity to do so with a love for history and culture that led him to explore countless museums and art galleries. His travels took him to the ancient streets of Rome, where walking on roads that were thousands of years old brought an immense smile to his face. His heart was drawn to the centuries-old sites of the Greek Islands, which he visited with great joy.
Despite his love for adventure, some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones—sitting on a beach with a cold beer, surrounded by family and friends, both old and new. His warmth and friendliness made him a magnet for people, and he made friends wherever he went.
But above all else, his family was his greatest treasure. The friendships, love, and memories he built with his wife, children, and grandchildren were the true sources of his happiness. They brought him an unshakable joy that lasted his entire life.
He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his passion for learning, and his unwavering love for those who meant the most to him. His laughter, stories, and presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Squirrel. Your adventures have not ended; they live on in the love and memories you’ve left behind.
