Mate Rukavina
October 11, 1928 - June 30, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mate Rukavina in his 87th
year. Beloved husband of Milka (nee Brkljacic) for 61 years. Devoted father to Anna
(Jure Murgic) and Mike (Christine Whitmore). Proud grandfather of Kathy (Joe
Bandula), Michael Murgic (Jelena), Matthew and Tomislav Rukavina, and step-
grandfather to Christopher and Carmen Kruk. Delighted great-grandfather to Petra and
Christian Bandula, and Maja, Thea, and Nika Murgic. Loving uncle of Jure and Mary Novacic and their family. Predeceased by his parents and eight of his siblings. Mate leaves his brother Nico and sister Ivke in Croatia, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mate was born in Trnovac, Lika, in what is now Croatia. As productive farming proved
difficult, Mate moved to Germany for eight years to support his family. But ultimately
desiring to unite the family the Rukavinas immigrated to Canada in 1969. By 1973 Mate
was working for Chrysler at the Etobicoke Casting Plant, and never looked back.
Mate enjoyed his retirement, dividing his time between Croatia and Canada, where he
enjoyed spending time with friends and family while his health allowed .
Thanks go to all the dedicated staff at Cawthra Gardens LTC who through their love,
care, and compassion made the last three years easier for the family while providing a
rich social life for Mate. Special thanks go to Ursula Dingler and Nella Nikolokakos, who
are now family; Dr. D Symons and Dr. L Huang for making the hard decisions; Nerie and
all the dedicated nurses, and to all the PSWs who perform difficult jobs with a smile and
a tender touch. Thanks also to Brian Fox, the chaplain, whose heartfelt singing will be a
lasting memory of Cawthra Gardens.
Friends may call at Turner and Porter (Peel) Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga
(Hwy 10 N of the QEW) on Friday, July 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Mass will be held at the Croatian Martyrs Church, 4605 Mississauga Road, on Saturday, July 4, at 10:00 a.m. Interment Assumption Cemetery. Reception
