In Celebration of

Mary Ellen Horne

February 28, 1917 -  September 9, 2016

Peacefully, in her 100th year. Predeceased by parents Frederick Charles and Ruth Maude (Gossard) Hayes, husband Donald Stuart Horne, and brother William Prine Hayes. Survived by daughters Marian Ruth (David Greenwood), Kathryn Anne (David Pearce); granddaughter Melanie Erin Greenwood; niece Jane Altobelli and nephews Fred Hayes and Jim Hayes. Born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Mary Ellen was an excellent student who studied piano and attended Secretarial School in Saskatoon, then worked at the Agricultural Experimental Farm where she met her husband Donald Horne. They married in 1940 and moved to Brantford, Ontario as newlyweds. In 1957, when Donald became Chief Engineer of Massey Ferguson, they moved with daughters Marian and Kathryn to Port Credit and became founding members of Dixie Curling Club and St. Hilary’s Anglican Church. After Donald’s sudden death in 1964, Mary Ellen became a legal conveyancer for Pallett and Pallett lawyers, eventually becoming a free lancer in partnership with her daughter Marian. For over 20 years they worked for varied clients in Toronto, Mississauga, and throughout Ontario, completing several major conveyancing projects, including large subdivisions, Pearson International Airport and all of downtown Peterborough. Mary Ellen was a talented musician who earned her Royal Conservatory certification in piano at age 17 and instilled a love of music in her daughters’ and her granddaughter. In later years she played the piano for singalongs at a senior daycare centre. She represented Dixie Curling Club at bonspiels at local and provincial levels, and was a featured performer in annual Dixie Belle skits. Mary Ellen was a skilled golfer at Credit Valley Golf Club and a demon bridge player in several duplicate and marathon bridge clubs. She was a wonderful cook and gracious hostess whose home on Broadmoor Avenue was the scene of many memorable dinners and parties. She also enjoyed travel adventures with family and friends.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Hilary’s Anglican Church, 2055 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy 10 N. of QEW) on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, a reception will be held at the church, and those who wish to share memories of Mary Ellen will be invited to speak.

In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to the Mary Ellen Horne Music Fund at St. Hilary’s Anglican Church.

Marion:

I remember your Mother with great fondness. She was always calm, cool and collected and she never failed to bring me a search on time or close a deal. I cherish the memory of our chats in the Registry Office and always valued her advice. I am now retired and can only hope that my retirement is as active and fulfilling as hers was.
My sincere condolences to you and the family.
