In Celebration of

Mary Cizmar

November 28, 1937 -  November 25, 2023

With broken hearts we share the passing of Mary Cizmar (née Sevc) on November 25, 2023. Predeceased by her husband Mike. She will be missed beyond measure by her 3 daughters Marianne, Veronica (Alex) and Milana (Tom) and her grandchildren Adam and Marley, brother John (predeceased by Virginia), her dear sister and closest confidante Anna (Radek) as well as many adored nieces and nephews, extended family and friends in Canada and Slovakia.

Jan and Maria Sevc came to Canada during the depression looking for a better life. That life brought them to a tiny Slovak community named Bradlo, on the outskirts of Northern Ontario in the town of Hearst. They began raising a family and Mary was born November 28, 1937 in the hospital in Hearst.

Mary was raised in true pioneer style by strong parents. It was here she developed the grit and perseverance she would draw on later in life.

The family moved to Toronto in the 50s to start a new life. Mary blossomed into a beautiful woman inside and out. She was warm and caring and enjoyed any outing that included dancing. Her stylish ways attracted her equally stylish future husband Mike. They married in 1965 and had 3 daughters. She is remembered for her compassion and being a great listener.

We will miss your beautiful smile and tenderness but we take comfort knowing that you have been reunited with your favourite dance partner.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 30th, 2023, 1-3pm and 6-9pm, at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6S 1P4. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11am at The Byzantine Catholic Slovak Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, 257 Shaw St, Toronto, ON M6J 2W7.

To the entire Cizmar family. I was saddened to hear the news about your mother Mary. I remember when you mother and father started dating. They were perfectly matched, and I do remember them dancing at various Slovak functions. They were blessed to have three lovely daughters, whom they adored. May her memory be a blessing. This obituary on Mary is so beautiful and so right. The picture is perfect. I will Miss Mary very, very much....her calm demeanour, her beautiful smile, her kindness and her good and gentle heart. I love her too and called her a dear, close friend. Please rest in peace and I'll see you again on the other side, where you can teach me to bake.
