Mary passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Mackenzie Health-Richmond Hill on November 16, 2025. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Vinko and Mary Kuchan. Although her battle with pancreatic cancer was brief, her life was long, rich, and full.
Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on May 16, 1932, Mary moved to Toronto and in 1955 became one of the original residents of Castlebar Road, proudly living in her home until her 92nd year. She was a cherished neighbour and a loyal friend whose warmth and kindness touched many throughout the community.
In her early years, Mary worked tirelessly to support and raise her family, often holding two jobs at the same time. She spent many years in a full-time office role with the Etobicoke District School Board and worked in the evenings at the Pink Poodle Boutique and D’Allairds at Sherway Gardens.
Her selflessness was especially clear in the years she cared full-time for her mother, whom she lovingly supported until her death in 2008, at 96 years. The two were inseparable, and Mary’s devotion remains a lasting example of her generous spirit.
Mary was the adored mother of Debbie (Bob) and Ed (Nancy), the much-loved Nana of Melinda (Curtis), Kim (Kevin), Joseph, and Rachel, and the proud Great Nana of Everett and baby Lydia. She also had a soft spot for her grand puppies Sadie, Winston, Willow, and Olive.
Although they regularly disappointed her, she remained a loyal and good-humoured Toronto Maple Leafs fan and rarely missed a game on CBC. Mary never really slowed down. She loved music and dancing. She kept driving into her nineties, often heading out to pick up her favourite Tim Hortons coffee, always ordered the same way (“Small with two cream, please.”) and she loved her BINGO scratch cards, though she never quite hit the big win. She cherished spending time with friends, and with family in Richmond Hill, Kingston, and Cambridge, in addition to daily phone calls when she would remind us how much she loved us.
She will be deeply missed and leaves a hole in each of our hearts that only her love could fill.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Delmanor Aurora, where Mary lived for her last years, for their compassionate care and support, and to the team at Mackenzie Health for providing peace and comfort in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill Hospital with appreciation from the family.
