February 19, 2024
Marvin Mitchell, devoted father, husband, brother and uncle, fitness, travel, music and history fanatic, passed away after a long battle with cancer on February 19, 2024, at the age of 46.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Caryl Newbery-Mitchell, his children, Nadia Simone, Naomi Olivia and Avery John, his sisters Candice Ferguson, Crystal Mitchell, his brother Mark Mitchell, his step-mother Barbara Mitchell and sister-in-law Lea Dietrich, brothers-in-law
Matthew Ferguson and Mark Dietrich, nieces Elle Dietrich and Mia Ferguson, nephews Hunter Dietrich and Nolan Ferguson, mother-in-law Yvonne Newbery, father-in-law John Newbery and step-grandmother Eslyn Mitchell.
Marvin was born in Trinidad on May 27, 1977. He has always had a love of sport and fitness and was a competitive wrestler and track runner in his high school and university years. He received a scholarship and went to university at the University of Iowa, and finished off his undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia. After university he settled in Toronto where he continued working in fitness and eventually started his own company, Blast Athletic Inc. He successfully built a close-knit community of likeminded fitness enthusiasts. He mentored and trained other fitness professionals and made a significant and lasting impact on many of his clients’ life.
In 2007 he met his future wife, Caryl, and they went on to have three beautiful children, Nadia in 2008, Naomi in 2014 and Avery in 2016, who together with his wife, became the most important part of his life. He also, somewhat begrudgingly, welcomed Coco, their toy poodle, into their lives in 2016.
Throughout his life he had a love affair with travel, but specifically with France and Cuba. He travelled to both numerous times, with the most recent being a memorable two-week trip to France with his family in July, 2023.
He was an avid Economist reader and had an uncanny ability to recite the history and current political environment of just about any region in the world.
Marvin loved a good jam and could often be found embarrassing his children by dancing and singing to his favourite albums.
Marvin had a huge heart, and was always ready and willing to help others. Even in the final months of his life, he ran his annual Daily Bread Foodbank campaign in December, and with the support of his friends, clients and community successfully completed a half marathon and raised thousands of dollars for the charity.
A celebration of life service is scheduled for 3:00pm on February 24, 2024 at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, located at 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga. Reception to follow the service.
