In Celebration of

Martin Tierney

May 11, 1929 -  April 15, 2020

On Wednesday April 15th, 2020 Martin Tierney, loving husband to Bridget (Deely), and father to four children, passed away due to Covid-19 at Kipling Acres in Toronto, Canada just shy of his 91st birthday.
Martin was born on May 11th, 1929 in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland to Thomas and Anastasia (Lannon). Martin was already a world class traveller at 19 years old when he worked in the Middle East from 1948 to 1952, visiting Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Syria, building the oil refinery and pipeline network for Anglo American. Martin emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1954 and met Bridie at a St. Paul’s church dance, they celebrated their marriage on April 14th, 1956. Martin joined the new Molson Breweries Fleet street brewery in 1955 and retired in 1990 after 35 years of service. Martin developed many lifelong friends at Molson’s and told his family many funny and memorable stories while working at the Fleet Street facility.
Martin enjoyed playing cards games, especially 25’s! He was a great accordion player and loved listening to the Irish & Scottish pipes and drums. He took a strong interest in reading about world affairs and discussing them. Many happy times were had at the schoolhouse cottage in the summer. Martin loved going to livestock and estate auctions while at the cottage and ice cream trips to Fenelon Falls. Dad was so proud to bring his family home to Ireland in 1977, we all cried when we left! The drive to Florida to see The Kennedy Space Centre was also a highlight for him in 2004.
Although Martin developed rheumatoid arthritis in his forties, he courageously battled through this disease while working full-time and raising a family. Martin never gave up even when he was in severe pain. His family and friends admired his faith, determination and work ethic.
Martin was preceded in death by his Father, Thomas and Mother Anastasia and Siblings John, Michael, Thomas, Mary Kenny, James and Nicholas. He is survived by his wife Bridie, his four children, Maureen (Peter), Raymond (Anita), James (Natalie), Desmond (Cathy) his sisters Peggy Kearney (James), Anna Payne (Kettering, Ohio), Eileen Hughes (Edwin), sister-in-law Mary (Chicago, Illinois), his thirteen grandchildren - Jackie, Monica, Lorraine, Matthew, Brianna, Nicholas, Kevin, Bernadette, Isabelle, Sophia, John, Thomas, Stephen and many other nieces and nephews.
Unfortunately Martin’s Mother inherited Huntington’s Chorea disease (HD). Our family has lost Anastasia, James, Thomas and Thomas’s children Teresa, John and Jean to this debilitating disease. Our family’s wish is to support the Huntington Society of Canada. A Gofundme account has been set up, see link below:

A Funeral Mass will be held at a future date at St. Clements Roman Catholic Church in Etobicoke, burial to follow at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery.

Although I only met Martin a handful of times, two things stand out to this day:
1. His smile and the twinkle in his eyes.
2. He was incredibly proud of his family - and with good reason!

The world has lost one of the great ones...

Dear Bridie and family - it was with great sympathy that we heard of the passing of your wonderful husband/dad today. (30th April 2020). Our deepest condolences to you all.

We had the joy and pleasure of meeting Bridie and Martin in 1994 - we cherish our memories of them and will never ever forget their hospitality, kindness and compassion that they showed us. also they were fabulous hosts and we would have been completely lost without them. They were also so good to us in 2013 when my Uncle Christy passed away.

Once again our sincere sympathies-

Mary & James

My Dad had a strong work ethic, he taught by doing, not by talking! We all saw what hard work looked like wether it was holding down a full-time job doing shift work at Molson's or the heavy lifting he did at the cottage. Dad loved his family, he was a devoted husband to my Mom and always found a way to show you he loved you. The day I came home from school and told him I wanted to play the drums he said "you mean you're not going to play the accordion? Oh well that's fine"! He supported all his children in whatever they wanted to do. He emphasized getting an education and following through to get that diploma or degree. He was wise beyond his years. While at Molson's he befriended colleagues who had escaped from communism in Eastern Europe, he told me the tragic stories these men endured. He had tremendous respect for what they went through. Luv Ya Dad! I will share more stories in the days to come about me Father!

Another amusing Martin Tierney story. On the way to Florida in 2004 (on a family trip), we stopped just north of Atlanta at a Mega mall...most probably "a low tax" mall. All the girls went in all 5 of them...Bridie, Maureen and the 3 girls. Oh yes...Bridie said...short stop 30-40 minutes, tops. 2 hours go by, 2 1/2 hours go by...Martin is livid. He actually wanted me to go into the mall and ask Property Management to get on the PA system and announce....if the Tierney Family doesn't report back to the vehicle in the next 15 minutes...the van was leaving for Northern Florida. Well, obviously that was not needed, because 10 minutes later (multiple parcels in tow)...the girls returned to the van. Then the cursing and tongue lashings continued to the Georgia/Florida border. True story, we can laugh about now. We saved a lot of money....however blood pressure readings were high that day. Also in those days we only carried one Pay as you Go Cell phone.

When we were younger, Maureen and I worked at grocery stores part-time. I worked at A&P and Maureen worked at Dominion. At Christmas time we were usually both working Christmas Eve. Dad looked forward to Maureen and I coming home so we could start the Christmas celebrations! He would wait in the Kitchen (pretending to be reading the paper), when we came in he would smile and make sure we had dinner. Now all the kids were home and he could relax. Those were special moments we will always remember!
