In Celebration of

Mario DeSotto

May 4, 1927 -  November 19, 2020

Peacefully, on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at home, at the age of 93. Devoted husband of the late Violetta. Loving father of Julia (Bob Gall) and Peter(Mary Kennedy), grandfather of Anthony and Katrina Gall.

Mario was born in Windsor Ontario from Italian immigrants Pietro and Emilia DeSotto. Mario was a gifted violinist that became a string consultant for The Etobicoke Board of Education. He was responsible for developing the first strings program in Canada with the middle schools of Etobicoke. He brought inspiration and encouragement to all his music teachers and students. He also adjudicated for the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival for strings throughout Canada. In addition, he performed with the Hamilton Symphony, the Old Mill Orchestra, in the orchestra at the Imperial Room of the Royal York Hotel and many strolling jobs in Toronto. He was also part of the initial music staff as a strings coach at The National Music Camp of Canada for many years.

Mario had a remarkable ability to remember a vast number of songs from around the world by ear. He performed his last strolling job when he was 90 years old.

He played the violin with the same love and passion he had for his loving wife Violetta. Mario was the primary caregiver for his wife who had Alzheimer's for over 20 years. He will be sorely missed by all of his family especially his grandchildren Anthony and Katrina whom he loved dearly.

A wonderful man that left an impact on many lives be it family, friends, colleagues or caregivers.
A memorial service will be held at a later date (due to Covid) to celebrate Mario DeSotto’s life. Please check this website at Turner and Porter for future dates.

Everyone that knew Mario is welcome to leave comments and fond memories.

I remember Mr. DeSotto mentoring us in the strings orchestra program at John G. Althouse Middle School back in the 70s, along with our music teacher, Ms. Patricia Geake. They both inspired and nurtured my talents in music, which to this day remains the most memorable and rewarding education I have ever received.
They paved the way for me to enjoy a lifelong journey of exploring many rewarding music opportunities that enrich my life. I will always be grateful to Mr. DeSotto for planting that seed. May the heavens welcome him with open arms, and celebrate the arrival of a wonderful soul who will rest in peace there now.
Sincerely,
Louise Pellegrini (DiCarlo)

I'm so glad we were able to have a face-to-face Skype conversation only a couple of weeks ago. All my love and condolences to my wonderful family Julia Bob, Katrina and Tony.

Although I did not have the pleasure to meet Mario I can tell by the way Julia spoke about him what kind of a person he was. My heart goes out to you and your family Julia. Losing both of your parents, so close together must be very difficult. God bless you.
