I miss you already, mom, but I will try to continue to live my life in a way that would make you proud. You will continue to live on in the thoughts, memories, feelings and stories that I will continue to share about you.

Marilyn deeply loved our two boys, Alan and David. She gave them a childhood that she herself never had: one of love and nurturing. Her mother, Marjorie Hather, died of cancer when she was only four years old leaving her grieving father, Robert Hather, to support the family and raise a young girl as best he could. He eventually married a woman with two girls of her own but who was not as loving and nurturing towards Marilyn as Marjorie had been. As a teenager, Marilyn left home to seek love and solace from relatives in western Canada. Returning to Ontario, she found comfort in a group home.

I am thankful that Marilyn and I met and had two wonderful sons: Alan and David. Marilyn found her niche in the La Leche League which helped breast feeding mothers. Marilyn became involved with issues she believed in, including protecting the environment from developers in Mississauga and Real Women to name two. She used her writing skills to advocate for causes that were close to her heart and was published in the Toronto Star and various magazines.

Even though our marriage ended after nearly 24 years together, I am thankful to Marilyn for the love she showed our children, especially in their formative years. Despite the marriage break-up, Alan and David are fine and caring adults of which both Marilyn and I are thankful and proud. They have brought much joy to both of us over the years. May Marilyn now rest in peace that eluded her for much of her life.

Dave and Al, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Marilyn always carried herself with such a joy of life. Whether she was visiting my mother on Hollington Crescent, or popping by for a visit during our college days in North Bay, she would always arrive with such positive energy.
Dave, I will always remember the photo required to commemorate the winter’s first incident of getting stuck in the snow, or her questioning my college-level hot dog intake.
