In Celebration of

Marija (Maria) Marčinko (nee Rajič)

February 28, 1963 -  November 19, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Marija (Maria) Marčinko (nee Rajič), announce her passing in Mississauga on Sunday, 19 November 2023. She is survived by her dear parents Liberan and Dominika Rajič, her devoted husband of 26 years, Zdravko – Jim, her sons Josip, Damian, and Marin, her elder brother Archbishop Petar Rajič, her younger brother Victor (Mary) with their son Luka and daughter Angelina Rajič, and many extended family members and friends in Canada, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the United States of America.

Marija attended the University of Toronto, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Physical and Health Education and went on to attend teachers’ college at York University where she completed her B.A.Ed. in 1991.

After successfully completing her studies she pursued a career in teaching, and she dedicated herself to the profession for almost 30 years. She began at Christ the King Elementary for a few years before moving on to teach high school, first at St. Joseph Secondary School, and then for many years at Iona Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga. During her time at Iona, she formed many cherished friendships with the teaching staff and was highly appreciated and valued by her students.

She married Zdravko – Jim Marčinko in 1997 and gave birth to three wonderful sons, who she raised and encouraged by word and example, to become good students and fine responsible young gentlemen. Her life was an example of genuine love and selfless devotion to her family and commitment to her profession. Despite the constant juggling of her teaching responsibilities and family obligations, she possessed a natural organizational talent that ensured everything somehow fell into place.

Marija’s Catholic beliefs had a profound impact on her life. Marija found inspiration and strength in her faith in God and entrusted herself and her family to this foundation of faith. Her unwavering convictions also gave her the courage to endure her illness with complete trust in God’s will, which was a source of great consolation and peace.

She will be missed by many who knew her and loved her. Despite the great void created by her departure, Marija’s entire extended family and friends can truly say with gratitude, we have had the privilege of knowing her and sharing a part of our lives with her. May God grant her eternal life among the chosen ones of his kingdom.

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live" (Jn 11:25).

Due to the overwhelming number of inquiries from family and friends, the family has decided to set up a trust fund for Marija's son, Joseph Marcinko, in lieu of flowers. Donations can also be made through e-transfer at the following e-mail: mjmarcinko@rogers.com.
Thank you for your support during this difficult time.

Izrazavamo duboku sucut cijeloj obitelji. S vama smo u boli.
Marija draga,
...dok suza sjaji na latici bijelog cvijeta, rastajemo se s tobom, za sada. Milo te u zagrljaj primili Isus i Marija.
Svjetlost vjecna svijetlila ti...

I am so sorry for your loss. Miss Marcinko was one of the nicest ladies I had ever had the pleasure of meeting during high school.

Maria, your passing has deeply saddened me. You truly were a gift to all the students who were fortunate to have had you as their teacher. I feel blessed to have met you and work with you as a colleague at Iona for so many years. I will cherish our last conversation where your warmth was so genuine like always. God bless you and rest in peace. My deepest condolences to your family and especially your beloved boys may God strengthen them in their time of grieving.
