Marie Adeleen Dickie
May 23, 1930 - December 7, 2014
MARIE ADELEEN DICKIE (nee Matthews)
Peacefully, on December 7, 2014, holding her rosary, and surrounded by her family. She was 84. Marie was born in 1930 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Her mother, Martha Van Hecke was from Belgium, and her father Reginald Matthews from England. He served in WWI, and was a proud Canadian postman. While people knew her as Adeleen, she always preferred Marie, and used it later in life. She had fond memories of growing up in a small, friendly city close to the mountains, having many long-time friends from St. Pat’s High, and singing in the choir. At 24, she married the tall, dashing, James Arnold Dickie and followed him through his career to exotic places like Winnipeg, Regina, Thompson and Toronto. They were married for 54 years until his passing in 2008. As both were only children, their bond and love for each other was very strong. Marie Adeleen was Mom to Barb, Cath and Pat, Mother-in-law to Hubert, Duncan and Debbie, and Grandma to Russ, Graeme, Laura and Brendan. Recently, she was especially proud of all of her grandchildren’s accomplishments. Marie was a quiet, independent person who loved gardening, cats, birds, and baking. Despite being a widow for over six years, she still drove and lived in her own home. During her life, she developed many comfortable, genuine relationships with friends, neighbours, and folks she got to know in service industries. Her final message: Life ends, but memory lives. Death is the last great accomplishment of life. Death, like life, is a Gift from God. Rest in peace Marie Adeleen, you will be missed. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 3055 Bloor St. W., Etobicoke (West of Royal York Rd.). A casual reception to follow. Any donations to her favourite charity, the Salvation Army, are appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Turner & Porter Butler Chapel: 416-231-2283. On-line condolences may be made using this website.
