It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria Elvira Ferreira, who was born on April 11, 1940, in São Miguel, Azores and who passed away peacefully on the morning on May 25, 2025, after having survived a life-altering stroke in 2020. Maria Elvira was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone she met.
Maria Elvira was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jose Ferreria whom she married on July 25, 1965, and whom she would forever refer to as the one and only love of her life. Together, they made the courageous decision to leave Portugal and move to Toronto, Canada in 1971 to provide their two young daughters with a brighter future. Maria (Douglas MacPherson) and Paula (Carlos Gouveia) were raised in a home filled with love, faith and happiness. While coming from modest and very humble beginnings, resilience, hard work and grit were mainstays. There were times when resources were few, but values were always strong. Notably the emphasis on education and the visionary belief in its value. Education was viewed as being not only the pathway to build the best future for their daughters but for future generations as well. For this, their daughters will forever be grateful because their parent’s sacrifices enabled them to prosper and achieve the success that their parents always wished for them.
Most importantly, Maria Elvira and Jose instilled in their daughters an unwavering commitment to family. There was nothing that made Maria Elvira happier than seeing and spending time with her family which included four grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart: Alexandra, Andrew, Christian, and Adam.
When Maria Elvira first arrived in Toronto, she worked as a housekeeper while also raising a young family, and it was with great pride that only a few years after arriving in her newly adopted homeland, she and her husband purchased their family home together where they would celebrate life’s many milestones and create wonderful memories together that will warm the hearts of all those who were welcomed at their table, because there was always room at their table.
Maria Elvira eventually moved on to work in the food industry at Galco Foods where she worked for over 25 years and where she made lifelong friends who exposed her to new foods and new cultures that found their way into her home and to her table because Maria Elvira loved to cook and bake.
She also loved to garden, crochet and travel and was able, after her retirement, to visit many parts of the Caribbean and complete several religious pilgrimages in Europe, one of which included several of her siblings Agostinho (Natalia), Jose (Filomena) whom she adored. Even though an ocean separated her from the rest of her siblings, her week always included finding time to call them and ensure they knew how important they were to her too: Antonio (D.), Celina, Immaculada (D.), Maria Gloria, and João.
Maria Elvira was a woman whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone she met, and her legacy of love, generosity, and compassion will continue to live on through her family and the many memories they shared together
She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Special thanks to the staff of AgeCare Westbury for their kindness and care of Maria Elvira at a time when she required significant support. The family would especially like to recognize Janina, Min, Ji, Sheeba, Marcia, Suzana, Denise, and the many Nurses and PSWs who made her last few weeks a time of peace and comfort.
May she rest in eternal peace
