In Celebration of

Margaret (Mae) Burgess, Ed.D.

October 25, 1934 -  January 14, 2022

Dr. Mae Burgess (née Douglas) died peacefully at The Mississauga Hospital (TMH) on January 14, 2022. Predeceased by her husband Don, Mae is survived by her children Heather (John) and Russel (Karen) and her beloved grandchildren David, Emily, Alexis, Vanessa, Cedric and Cameron. Mae was born in Prince Edward Island and moved to Toronto where she started a long and successful career as a school teacher and principal. She was much loved and appreciated by her students whose lives were greatly enriched by Mae’s enthusiasm and dedication to her profession. Mae’s passion was the teaching of reading skills (to which her grandchildren will attest). Late in her career she returned to the University of Toronto, obtained her Doctorate of Education, and continued thereafter to consult as an advocate for that passion.

Throughout her life Mae was an outgoing, energetic and generous spirit, actively involved in a variety of volunteer and community endeavours. She will be greatly missed by her many family members and friends, too many to mention. Her family would like to express sincere appreciation to the many caregivers who provided Mae with comfort and care during her lengthy stay at TMH.

Cremation has already taken place. In accordance with Mae’s wishes a celebration of her life will be held in Prince Edward Island at a later date. Condolences, which will be shared at the celebration, may be forwarded through www.turnerporter.ca/memorials. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mae’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
