In Celebration of

Madeline "Mickey" Kole (nee Mokrynski)

March 24, 1934 -  July 6, 2018

It is with utter and complete gut-wrenching sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Madeline at the young age of 84, while at Mt, Sinai hospital, with her daughter Tricia by her side, lovingly holding her hand.
Madeline was born in Creighton Mine, Ontario to her Ukrainian parents Andrew and Annie. Although the family moved to Toronto when she was 6 years old, Madeline was always proud to say she originated from Sudbury, where she maintained many close and dear friendships.
While she was growing up in Toronto Madeline's parents owned two popular and busy restaurants: The Wellington Cafe and The Satellite (Wilson Avenue and Queen Street West, respectively). It was here that Madeline developed her strong work ethic, rising super early to help open the restaurant before heading off to school and then rushing back to assist with the dinner crowd and tirelessly work until closing. She shared many fun stories about the crazy challenges faced by family owned restaurants, but while the good memories far outweighed the bad, she continued to have "nightmares" of the times they'd run out of stock while customers were lined up out the door.
It was while working at the restaurant that, at the age of 14, she was bestowed the nickname "Mickey", one that would stick for her lifetime among her closest friends.
After graduating from Kent Commercial, Mickey accepted her first office job at Canada Packers, in the steno pool. With her easy going demeanour, commitment to perfection and extreme dedication to her job she quickly became Supervisor, yet continued to do double duty by helping out at her family's restaurant outside of office hours, always with a smile on her face and a spring in her stylish stilettos! Although she had many different jobs in her lifetime, ranging from Secretary to Real Estate Agent (Royal Trust) to Office Manager to Securities Administrator (CIBC), she always recalled her Canada Packers years as her fondest.
The role that Madeline excelled at the most, though, was "Mommy" to her extremely fortunate and eternally proud daughter, Tricia. Mickey and Tricia shared an enviably close bond, traversing through life's ups and downs arm in arm. There truly never will be another woman who fulfills Motherhood as perfectly and effortlessly as she did.
Although tiny, cute and increasingly frail in stature, Madeline was strong and fierce in facing life's challenges. She carried herself with grace and poise throughout ailing health, recently beating the odds and learning to walk again after a devastating leg fracture.
Words cannot adequately express how much she is already missed, but we will take comfort in knowing she has joined her beloved parents Andy & Annie, and her dear brother Wally, where she will continue to shine down upon us.
Madeline lived her life as a sparkling example of what a truly wonderful mother, daughter, sister, Chocha (Aunt) and friend should be. Kindness and humour radiated from her gentle soul and we have all been blessed and forever changed for the better having had her in our lives.
Among her numerous talents, she was an amazing cook & baker. Those lucky enough to have tasted her famous cheesecakes, delicious coffee cakes, perfect perohy and yummy cabbage rolls will attest to that!
Mickey will be sorely missed by her nephews John (Angelina) and Will (Susanne), great niece Harriet, sister-in-law Gwen and her many friends but her smiles, hugs and laughter are immeasurably missed by her daughter and best friend, Tricia.

Mom, my heart is heavy with the pain of losing you but it will always be filled with my love for you. It is a complete honour and privilege to call you "Mommy" and I am forever grateful for the love you showered upon me throughout our too short time together. All the love my heart can hold remains with you. Be well and be at peace xoxox

Friends may visit at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West (east of Jane subway) on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 11 a.m.. Interment at Riverside Cemetery.
