In Celebration of
Lourenco Oliveira Tavares
December 17, 1939 -
October 12, 2025
Lourenco Oliveira Tavares, a man of quiet strength and integrity, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at 85. Born on December 17, 1939, in the Azores, Portugal, to Mariano Tavares De Medeiros and Urselina Da Conceição Oliveira, Lourenco’s life was marked by courage and devotion to family.
In 1968, Lourenco, his wife, Natalia, and son, Sidonio, immigrated to Toronto, Canada, with only suitcases, building a new life through hard work. He believed in doing today’s work today, a principle that guided him always.
A Portuguese military veteran, Lourenco served in the Angolan Civil War, carrying its scars silently. He once studied for the priesthood, reflecting his moral depth, though he chose another path. His ethical nature was evident in all he did.
A gifted storyteller, Lourenco’s tales of humour and wisdom captivated all. In later years, he faced Alzheimer’s and heart disease with grace. He is survived by his wife, Natalia, son, Sidonio, daughter-in-law, Paula, and grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Sarah, and Adam; brothers, Duarte (Virgília) and José Maria (Maria Goret); and sister, Maria do Carmo (Manuel). He was predeceased by his brother, Raul (Adriana). His legacy of kindness and perseverance endures.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (https://alzheimer.ca/en).
