Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Lorraine passed away peacefully in her 86th year following a remarkable life.
Lorraine was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and grew up in Pretoria where she was educated at St. Albans School for Girls. With an interest in European history, Lorraine left South Africa in 1960 on the RMS Pendennis Castle. After several weeks in London, she traveled around Europe for two years, living and working in many cities. On her travels she met two Canadians who invited her to visit their country, which she did in 1962. Lorraine loved Montreal and was fortunate to find a job in the Department of Psychology at McGill University, where she met her future husband, Shizuhiko (Nishi). They married and moved to Toronto in 1967 where Nishi accepted a position at the University of Toronto.
After several years devoted to raising their son, Lorraine took a position at the School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto, where she spent the next 29 years.
Lorraine continued to travel the world throughout her life, visiting many places in Europe, Asia and Africa. She held special affection for her South Africa – that she always called a “land of milk and honey” – as well as for Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt and Jordan.
Lorraine was inspired throughout her life by the words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings” and John Masefield: “I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky; And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.”
A private celebration of life will be held by the family.
