In Celebration of

Lon Pencak

October 21, 1934 -  May 31, 2019

Lon passed away on May 31, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Nusia (Mary Anna), son Marko, his wife Tara and daughters Larissa and Katrina, son Package, his wife Barri and daughter Scarlett. Lon is also survived by his sister Irene Lawryshyn (Jerry).
Lon fled his native Ukraine during WWII and made his way to Canada. He graduated from the School of Architecture at UofT and enjoyed a career of designing buildings, schools and churches. He later joined the Government of Ontario where he progressed to become Asst. Deputy Minister responsible for the design, construction and management of all provincial facilities and property. He completed his career with real estate firms Royal LePage and Marathon Realty.
He and Nusia enjoyed taking road trips. This started with the purchase of a sports car in England and travel through Europe for two months for their honeymoon in 1960. In later years, they criss-crossed both Canada and the US numerous times.
Lon’s passion was carpentry and he undertook numerous projects. He designed his beloved chalet near Collingwood and built it by hand with a group of close friends during weekends and vacations. This was his favourite getaway where he skied during the winter and sailed the waters of Georgian Bay during the summer. He also enjoyed tennis, volleyball and hiking.
Lon was a founding member of the COSBILD investment club. Over the years, the club shifted its focus to fundraising and social events - Lon enjoyed the company of many close friends and always looked forward to the monthly meetings which were followed by rounds of poker.
Visitation and panachyda service will be held on Tuesday June 4th from 7-9pm at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel , 2357 Bloor St West, Toronto. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 5th at 10am at the chapel at St Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery, 1280 Dundas St West, Oakville.

He lived a life full of love, fun, and adventure. He inspired us with his integrity, honesty and attention to detail. He will be sorely missed.

Lon’s sons and our sons played together for many years. Lon and I built a fence between our backyards with a gate so the children could run back and forth. I held the hammer while Lon designed and basically built the fence. So very sorry to hear of his passing.

Lon headed the Accommodation Group when I joined the Ministry of Government Services in 1981. Over the six years that we worked together he provided both a strong and competent professional role model and the mentorship for me to succeed in the public service. He gave me valuable advice, well considered feedback and opportunities to learn and to advance in my career. In the traditional public works environment of that era, Lon set high expectations for good design, rigorous procurement and fair construction practices. Ontario was well served by his high professional standards.
I recall vividly his advice to me when a particular proposal was rejected by the government. I was both disappointed and frustrated that the politicians couldn't approve what we thought was a sound and cost-effective plan. Lon told me that our role as professionals was to conduct the best analysis, to present the best technical advice, and then, to accept the politicians' decisions and implement them diligently and efficiently - without complaining or second-guessing their direction.
As an Architect early in my career, I was influenced greatly by Lon. He was a credit to our profession, a guardian of the public interest, and a kind considerate person.

With my sincere condolences to Lon's family and friends.

Dear Family,
We were sad to hear about the passing of Pan Lionio.
He was a handsome and active man who led a full life.
Together with Pani Nusia they made a beautiful looking couple.

I first met Pan Lionio at my uncle Orest’s wedding when he was an usher and I was the junior bridesmaid.

Many years later, Pani Nusia taught our children at St. Demetrius School.
Our cousins are good friends with their children.
We have known each other for a long time.

I extend condolences to the Pencak family from the Evtushenko family and wish Pan Lionio happy trails and many more projects to keep him busy up above.....

Love,
Daria (Darka) Evtushenko
