In Celebration of

Lois Evelyn Garvie

September 30, 1928 -  June 16, 2021

It is with heavy hearts the family of Lois Evelyn Garvie (nee Matches), 92, announce her sudden passing on June 16, 2021 at the Mississauga Trillium Hospital.

She was born to parents Walter and Beatrice Matches on September 30, 1928 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan and went to school in the Rosetown area and Owen Sound, Ontario; attended Normal School in Toronto and taught at Victoria Public School in Owen Sound until starting a family.

Lois was married to the late Walter Allan Garvie in 1955 and celebrated 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2009. Family was her life and Lois is survived by her children Marilyn (Dave), Bruce (Michelle), Nancy, Robert (Pam) and her much loved grandchildren Matthew (Amber), Chris (Mark), Carrie (Erik), David (Lynsay), Jennifer (Cam), Scott (Melinda) and Paige. Lois was also the beloved matriarch of the Garvie/Johnson family, the Brookbank and Matches families and also leaves behind her nephews, nieces, and many cousins.

Lois was a life-time member of the United Church of Canada, moving from Knox United in Owen Sound to St. Luke’s on-the-Hill United and then Applewood United Church in Mississauga. She was a member of the United Church Women’s group (UCW) and church choirs for most of her adult life. Her love of quilting, knitting, reading, card playing, and local activities added to her legion of friends through the Mississauga Quilters Guild, the Monday afternoon quilting/knitting group, bridge groups, book club and Applewood Friends. Lois was also an accomplished pianist and will be remembered by the students that she taught.

Lois will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Lois’ life will be held in Mississauga at a later date. Internment will take place in Owen Sound in the near future.

The family requests that, where desired, donations be made to the Applewood United Church Memorial Fund, Sleeping Children Around the World, or a charity of your choice, in Lois’ memory.

It seems so strange to be reading this obituary. Lois has been a mainstay of my life for so many years. The mother of my dear friend Marilyn and my brother's friend Rob, a friend of my parents, a member of my church that I saw every Sunday, a fellow chorister in the church choir, making beautiful quilts and other items for church bazaars, serving in the kitchen at church suppers, hosting Marilyn and Nancy's craft shows. So many touch points in my life. She was such a strong, positive presence and she will be missed. She leaves a beautiful legacy in her children and grandchildren. Rest well, Lois.

What an amazing person - always happy to see you when you stopped by for a visit, even if the person you came to visit (Marilyn, Bruce, Nancy, Rob) wasn’t home. She will be missed and our thoughts are with the Garvie family during this sad time.
