Linda Meredith-Jones (nee Michaelis) passed away at age 79 early on Sunday, October 26th - peacefully, painlessly, and bathed in the love of her family. She was finally released from the grip of Myotonic Dystrophy Type 2 (MD2) that, over the last 15 years of her life, robbed her of almost all of her physical ability, but not her spirit or love of her family and life.
Linda is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ron, her sons Ryan (Michelle) and Sean (Kerri), her grandchildren Luca, Maelle, Ben and Layton, her sister Dr. Loralea Michaelis (Steve), her 3 nieces, 5 nephews and her sisters-in-law Ann Klassen, Sheila Michaelis and Gail Foy.
She is predeceased by her father, Carl Michaelis, her mother Ida Michaelis (nee Dunne) and her brothers Paul and Philip Michaelis.
Linda grew up in the city of Etobicoke and began a career in that city in 1968 as an elementary school teacher. In 1973, she retired from teaching to raise her sons.
As her sons grew older she joined a volunteer kidney research team at the Toronto Children's Hospital, enrolled at York University to study psychology, and completed the studies needed to qualify as a Special Education teacher. She then resumed full-time teaching, dedicating herself to helping children with learning and behavioral challenges - a role she truly loved.
Linda will be remembered for her wonderful attention to detail and her gift for creating a warm, well-organized home. She delighted family and friends with her amazing Christmas baking and the delicious dinner parties she so lovingly hosted. A deeply conscientious person, Linda devoted herself wholeheartedly to everything she set her mind to.
Although the last years of Linda’s life were filled with health challenges, she faced them with courage, strength, and a positive mental attitude. She began each day by asking about the wellbeing of others. She was and will always be loved and cherished by her family and friends.
Many thanks to the staff of the Credit Valley Hospital and particularly to the nurses and doctors who provided such attentive and compassionate care. Above all, heartfelt thanks to her PSW, Jovita, whose knowledge, gentleness, and loving support brought comfort to Linda and her family throughout her final years.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Turner & Porter, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by a short service and reception at 3:00 p.m., to remember and honor Linda’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (https://www.myotonic.org) or Muscular Dystrophy Canada (https://muscle.ca).
