In Celebration of

Lidia Kowalenko

November 21, 1929 -  December 4, 2018

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at age 89 years surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Wasyl and predeceased by her brother Sergio, her sisters Wiera and Ewa and survived by her brother Walter. Loving mother of Alex (Mabel) and Andy (Catharine). Cherished Baba of Natalia (Luis Alejandro), Cristina (Steven), Alexander, Juliana and Alyssa. Proud great-grandmother of Luis Felipe, Nicolas and Sienna.

She will be sadly missed by her entire extended family and all those who knew her.

Lidia and her family survived World War II leaving Komory, Ukraine and living in Switzerland then immigrating to Argentina where she lived for 17 years before coming to Canada. She had a profound love of reading, the opera, classical movies and her family. She spoke and wrote multiple languages, keeping in touch with close friends all over the world. Lidia worked many years as a seamstress creating beautiful gowns and quickly became the family seamstress having created several wedding dresses and garments for special occasions.

Lidia maintained her Ukrainian heritage teaching her grandchildren all of the special traditions and kept in touch with her Argentinian roots with weekend barbecues and conversing in Spanish.

We are thankful for all of the wonderful care and services provided by the staff at Copernicus Lodge throughout her time living there and especially in her last days.

If desired, donations in Lidia's memory to Copernicus Lodge would be sincerely appreciated by the family. www.copernicuslodgefoundation.com

We are so sad to hear of your loss. Tia Lidia was such a kind and loving lady. Her warm smile and positive words will always be remembered. Only a year and a day from her sister Weira's passing. We hope that they are together again, sharing in their special life moments. She will be missed. All our love and prayers through this difficult time.

So sad to hear of your loss. Many fond memories hanging out south of the tracks; Mrs. Kowalenko always offering up a snack and a drink to the boys. May you and your family find peace in this difficult time.

Its with sadness I say goodbye to my wonderful Lidia. She was soft spoken but her eyes and smile would light up a room. Always made time for anyone and her kindness was always so evident. Lidia was a perfect example of do not sweat the small things in life because they will always be there. She was alway so kind to me and she was such a beautiful person. Everytime I see a Turner Classic movie will think of her. Movies like Meet Me in St Louis and Singing in The Rain are movies that make me think of Lidia. Andy you had a great Mom and she loved you and was so proud of you like you could not imagine. Say goodbye is so hard but knowing she is with Bill now makes it okay. I love you Lidia and Thank You for teaching me such Kindness.
Love Always

We are thinking of you with deepest sympathy. Saying goodbye to a Mom is never easy. She looks like a sweet lady in the photo. May she rest in peace.
