In Celebration of

Leslie John Wardrop

December 27, 1946 -  August 29, 2018

After a brief bout of rough water, Les has set sail on his final voyage on 29 August 2018.

Les was born in Manchester, England and immigrated to Canada with his parents, Richard and Edith (Perryman) in the summer of 1951. He grew up in Rexdale. After graduating from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (1966), he joined CBC and worked in many areas of television broadcasting until his retirement in 2006.

At 21, he bought himself a piece of Crown Land in the Pickerel River area, and proceeded to build an A-frame cottage. His love of the water had him enjoying a fleet of small watercraft, water skiing and fishing. In 1981, he married Patricia Galinski (formerly of CBSA), and together they enlarged the cottage to an all season second home to house a growing family -- Andrew, Peter, Katryn (deceased) and Michelle. He sold the cottage when is love of sailing did not give him the time to enjoy the retreat he built.

Les was an active participant in his family's life. He became an executive member of the West End United Soccer Club and a certified soccer coach, successfully coaching teams at an all-star level. He even enjoyed several seasons of playing indoor soccer himself.

Les built his first sail boat as a young boy, then a Mirror class dingy as a young man. He joined Etobicoke Yacht Club with a 30 foot Alberge, which was quickly upgraded to Skana, a 36 foot CS Merlin. He was introduced to racing by a fellow member and a love affair was born. He sold Skana to obtain for himself a racing machine, Shockwave, a Tartan 33. He has participated in Club races, Mimico races, AHMEN, Susan Hood, and Lake Ontario 300. His love of sailing and racing meant that he would try his best to introduce others to the sailing world and truly enjoyed training sailors. He spent many happy hours at EYC. Les was ready to assist whenever and in whatever way he could.

We would like to extend a thank you to the staff of St Michael's Hospital and St Joseph's Health Centre for their care and support during such a trying time.

Friends may call at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. (east of the Jane subway) on Saturday, September 8th from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 11 a.m. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation or St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation.

I only knew of Les as a child at 1st, as my Canadian cousin, then later as an adult when we visited him and his family and I had the pleasure of meeting my second cousins.
Such a sad loss
Rest in peace Les, my Canadian Cousin x

Malcolm Little (EYC and the Lake Ontario Race circuit.)

Entered August 31, 2018 from Toronto

I am very sorry to the whole family for your loss. I found it to be a real shock when I heard the news. I am sure it was for you also since it seems to come out of the blue as opposed to having a long lead-up. From my own experience with my parents, it is harder when it happens and is not expected.
I enjoyed his company on the race circuit as well as at EYC where I had the opposite slip for many years.
He will be missed by all.
