In Celebration of

Konrad Widmaier

December 9, 1935 -  November 18, 2018

Konrad passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He had been ‘Opa’ to Jacob, Jordan, Katrina, Keanan and Ariel, as well as the father to Ralph and Birgit, father in-law to Josee and Dave, and for 53 years the amazing husband to Eva.
We will miss him terribly but will enjoy many fond memories. Christmas, Easter, and Birthdays were celebrated surrounded by family and friends. A good laugh, stories and discussions were shared by all.
There were numerous beautiful summers at the cottage filled with days of beekeeping, swimming and sailing and evenings of bon fires or playing board games. Extensive travels within Canada, in Europe, the US, Central America and a family favored vacation spot in Akumal, Mexico.
In his younger years, Konrad was an avid fencer and was selected, several times, to compete for Canada in the British Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games and at tournaments in Europe. Eventually Konrad’s interest led to sailing and he became an early member of the Outer Harbour Centerboard Club (OHCC). He and friend, Joe Holdenried, built two International Contender Sailboats, so that they, along with buddy Frank Whittington, could sail this challenging boat in competition. Later he, with pal Michael Agrell, sailed a 505 and the two became a very successful team competing in the club regattas.
But Konrad’s favourite location was the cottage and that is where we will remember him the most. From early spring to late fall it was ‘Cottage Time’ - It will be so lonely without him there.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of Jane subway, on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 12 noon, followed by a Celebration of Life Service in the Chapel at 1 p.m.

I fondly remember how excited Konrad got when talking about sailing or boats in general , it was infectious and I was infected . As a child I remember him taking me sailing for the first time and teaching me to water ski. He will be missed. Condolences and best wishes to Eva, Birgit , Ralph and family .
