Kieran Denis Carroll, P.Eng., of Port Credit, Ontario passed away at home, peacefully in his sleep and surrounded by loving family, at the age of 91, after a prolonged illness.
Beloved husband of Susan Douglas, and much-loved father of his children with his first wife Maeve (nee Murphy): John (Yvonne), Kieran (Laura), Kevin, Anne Keeley (Eddie), Patricia (Claude Prevost) and James (Julie). He was predeceased by Maeve, and by his second wife Margaret (née Harker). Kieran will be remembered and sadly missed by his extended family; son-in-law and daughters-in-law, 15 grandchildren and their spouses, 17 great-grandchildren, and his many relations and friends.
May he rest in peace.
Kieran was born in Dublin, Ireland on 23 November 1934, to Prof. John Carroll and Hilda Carroll (née Mathews); he was predeceased by his brothers Aidan and Eoin, and by his sisters Daire, Sheelagh and Áine. He obtained his degree in electrical and mechanical engineering from University College Dublin in 1957. The day after marrying Maeve in Dublin in October of that year, they set sail for Canada from Liverpool aboard the Empress of England, for what was meant to be a 2-year job with Westinghouse in Hamilton, but which led to a lifelong series of adventures in Canada and beyond. After a premature termination of his job at Westinghouse caused by the cancellation of the Avro Arrow program, he soon found new employment at Bell Canada, in a series of engineering and management positions which between 1958 and 1990 saw the growing Carroll family move from Don Mills to Sudbury, to Ottawa, to Montreal, and finally to Clarkson in Mississauga; this included two sojourns totaling 4 years in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s, in which Kieran led a team of Bell Canada engineers and technicians in installing a modern telephone system across that Kingdom (and for which he learned Arabic). He subsequently formed and ran several companies providing manpower and consulting expertise to telecom industry customers across the globe. He and Maeve travelled extensively during their time in Saudi Arabia and afterwards, particularly to their villa in Mojacar, Spain (for which trips he learned Spanish). During Maeve’s prolonged illness, leading to her death in 2003, Kieran was her tireless caregiver. He subsequently had 5 joyful years married to Margaret (Maree), continuing travels with her until her illness and death in 2011. The final 15 years of his life were spent with Susan, welcoming her children and grandchildren into his life. Of course, they too went on many trips abroad, including numerous ocean cruises. During his final illness, Susan provided ceaseless, loving support.
There will be a Celebration of Life event for Kieran in the spring-time, at a date and place that will be announced here presently.
