In Celebration of

John Philip Barratt

August 12, 1944 -  February 15, 2019

Sadly, John passed away on February 15th in the Mississauga Hospital in the presence of his younger son, Jordan, after a hard fought battle with bladder cancer.

John was born in Trail, British Columbia on August 12th 1944 to Jean and Phil Barratt. He had one much loved older sister, Nancy Whitham, who visited him from Calgary just two weeks ago.

John was married to Jennifer Rodgers whom he had met at university in 1970. In 1973, they moved to Mississauga from Vancouver when John was transferred. They had two sons, Jeffrey Michael and Jordan Alexander. Both are CPAs, no doubt influenced by their father.

Our family was blessed with the arrival of Sloane and Will, born to Jeff and his wife, Tara Douglas, as well as Emily and Reid, Jordan and Heather’s children. John loved his grandchildren and they loved him – a relationship that benefitted each one of them.

John graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Beginning with the Royal Bank, he worked for a number of financial institutions including Lloyds Bank as its Deputy CEO. In 1985, he received an Executive MBA from MIT. After his banking career, he then worked with Coscan in the land development business in the U.S. John also spent several years working in Silicon Valley in California dealing with bankruptcies and insolvencies during the tech bubble. In 2005, he returned home to retire, only to discover Crystal Fountains Incorporated. Three weeks ago, he finally wrote his letter of resignation from CFI.

John also loved the Credit Valley Golf Club. The friendships developed over the years were one of the most important accomplishments of his life. Just as important were the friendships and partnerships he found at the bridge tables of the MOBridge Club.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at The Credit Valley Golf and Country Club on Saturday, March 2nd from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

If so desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society may be made in John’s memory.

As a member of an informal monthly Couples Bridge Club, I will always remember John as a warm, big-hearted fellow with a roguish smile as he delighted in telling us tales about growing up in Trail, BC -- this before we got down to the business of Bridge the playing of which he was indeed a Master. Needless to say, he will be sorely missed.

To the Entire Barratt Family - we send you our deepest condolences on the loss of a beloved Husband, Father and Proud Grandfather. John was a very dear friend and golf buddy to Bruce these past many years at Credit Valley. These past 6 years in particular, his friendship knew no bounds as with his time, he gave Bruce unwavering Support, never failing to reach out to offer his help. Our hearts are heavy over this news. We will miss him and send you our thoughts and prayers. May God comfort you all in this time of need.
Fondly, The Findlays...Bruce and Debbie

I was very sorry to hear via Sheila that John was fighting cancer in Toronto, and now that that fight has come to an end. We are at an age where things happen, whether it be a fall, hearts or cancer... but it is six years now that I lost Mona - and I must say that it doesn't get any easier. Surprised to hear that John earned his Exec MBA at MIT, a bit more prestigious than SFU, where I was in the first Exec MBA class... earned while working full time at BC Hydro. Sad that I won't meet John again, or perhaps even to sail with him on Lake Ontario (I think he did that but could be wrong).
Life is by no means always easy and this is one of those times when it becomes quite tough. Sad to lose my cousin even if he lived in Toronto.

John P. Barratt. He was larger than life. And he lived life that way. Our friendship spanned nearly 30 years, and during that time we came to know John’s many sides:

We remember him as an Intrepid Traveller - Touring China or on Safari in Africa.

As an Accomplished Sportsman - Skiing the Rockies or golfing in California

As a Loyal Fan - Cheering on his sons from the stands, whether in a hockey rink or at the football field. (And always sharing the popcorn.)

As a Generous Host – welcoming us in San Jose , and at the annual Barratt Christmas bash

As a Theatre and Music Fan – always enjoying our annual excursions to the Shaw Festival musicals

Despite all his world travels and interests, we believe John was happiest in Jennifer’s beautiful garden. And please pass the chocolate ice cream!

Jeniffer, I send you my deepest condolences . Losing your best friend, husband and life partner is a feeling that cannot be described. He was a good friend to my husband Nei, who passed on his 85th birthday last year, and they had many happy moments together on the golf course at Credit Valley.

I send you my prayers and I know you will find great comfort in your family and especially your dear little grandchildren.
