In Celebration of

John McRae

November 13, 1935 -  April 27, 2023

John Joseph Stanislaus McRae, was called by God to eternal life on April 27, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born on November 13, 1935, in Toronto to Dr. Joseph and Margaret McRae. John is survived by his beloved and treasured wife of 47 years, Susan Rose, his brother Michael (Tricia), his sons John, Joseph, Peter, Matthew, Mark, and daughter Virginia, son in law Frank and his daughters-in-love Susan, Jeanette, Amy, Natalie, and Kristen. He was also a blessed grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Vanessa, Sean, Alanna, Mary, John Robert, Anna, Eliza, Matthew, Yvonne, Michaela, Natalia, Caroline, James, and Emily.

John was a gifted athlete, a lover of the lessons of hockey and golf, and a proud St. Michael's Man. He spent a brief but impactful time in the seminary. He was a voracious reader with an insatiable desire to pass on what he had learned. John would readily admit that he was a character with a joyful and mischievous nature. He revelled in jokes, parties, scotch, black tea, and colourful conversation. He loved bringing a smile to the face of others – leaving them hopeful and encouraged – be it a friend or a stranger. When you asked John how he was doing the answer was always…Fantastic!

Moving on from a career in business John was led to become a charismatic professor at George Brown College. Beyond the classroom he was available to anyone in need. He was a trusted listener and thoughtful counsellor to a countless number of people. In 1978 he founded the Global Beacon Community based on the teachings of the Catholic Church with a mission of prayer, unity, education, and evangelization. In 1989 he founded Mother of Mercy Center as a place of retreat, restoration, and fellowship for all. In 2001 he founded Catholic Businessmen and Businesswomen for Christ.

John was a captivating orator who easily connected with audiences large and small, delivering a consistent message of hope, and the importance of putting God first in your life. He will be remembered for his exemplary life of devotion to his family, community, selfless courage, empathy, and faith in God’s Love and Mercy.

Visitations will be held at Turner & Porter (4933 Dundas St. W.) on Wednesday, May 3, 2-4 pm (Wake service and Visitation) and 7-9 pm (Visitation). The Funeral Service will be held on May 4, 2023, 11 am at Our Lady of Peace Church (3914 Bloor St. W.) and immediately followed by the interment at the Holy Cross Cemetery (8361 Yonge St.). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mother of Mercy Center.
