John Fung, 81, passed away peacefully at Trillium Health Partners: Credit Valley Hospital. Beloved husband of the late Constance "Connie" Fung (nee Seto), with whom he shared many cherished years. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Kai Kwong (Frank), Kai Tung (Augustine), Kai Tai (Simon), and Yin Ling (Maria). John was also predeceased by his parents Fung Dor and Leung Lai Yee, and brothers Kwong Yui (John), Kai Yun, and Kai Cheung (Vincent).
John will be deeply missed by his extended family, in-laws, close friends, nephews, nieces, grand-nieces, and grand-nephew, who remember him as a devoted brother, warm-hearted uncle, loyal friend, and a man full of intelligence, humour, resilience, and quiet strength.
Born in Guangdong, China, John moved to Hong Kong as a teenager and served 3 years in the Royal Navy as an Electrical Mechanic 1st Class. In 1967, he immigrated to Canada to pursue his studies. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University in 1972, and earned his MBA at the University of Toronto in 1977.
John’s career as an electrical engineer was marked by innovation and technical leadership in intelligent transportation systems. He began his career at Bell-CCG, and in 1975 joined Honeywell in Toronto, where he developed one of the first real-time, colour CRT-based building monitoring and control systems using microcomputers. In 1981, John received Honeywell Inc.’s Man of the Year Award in Minneapolis for his outstanding contributions.
He was "invited" to teach part time at Seneca College in 1978, sharing his deep knowledge of microprocessor systems. In 1981, John joined Marshall Macklin Monaghan, where he specialized in advanced transportation technology. He developed and specified Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems and helped shape the design and functionality of Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI), Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC), and Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems for clients across North America and internationally.
From 1984 to 2006, John led his own successful firm, Constance Consulting Ltd., where he contributed to notable infrastructure and intelligent transportation projects including projects with IRD (International Road Dynamics):
- Singapore’s Electronic Road Pricing System (ERPS)
- Ontario’s Highway 407 tolling system
- Truck inspection stations across North America and abroad
- Electronic border-crossing systems at the Ontario/New York/Michigan borders
- The I-75/401 Commercial Vehicle Electronic Screening System
Sincere thanks to the March of Dimes Canada, PSW team and the nurses and caregivers at Sheridan Villa Long Term Care Home. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery in the "Sandalwood Room", on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at 3pm, followed by an Inurnment at 4 pm. A family dinner announcement will be made on the day of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Online condolences may be made to the family using this website.
