In Celebration of

John Douglas Hagerman

January 22, 1934 -  March 20, 2017

John passed away suddenly on March 20 2017. John Douglas Hagerman was born in Belleville, Ontario on January 22, 1934, the son of Stanley and Edith Hagerman. John was the second of four children - older brother Dr. Stan Hagerman, his younger brother Dr. Fred Hagerman and his younger sister Ellen Low.

John grew up on their farm on the Bay of Quinte and after finishing school, he ventured off to Royal Roads Military College in Victoria BC, graduating in 1953. From there, he went off to Queen’s University, graduating in 1956 with a Diploma in Industrial Relations and in 1957 with a B. Sc. Mechanical Engineering.

Between his work and his family, he had a tremendous life. He loved to travel and worked across the country.

John met Barbra Leacock in Montreal during his first job at Dominion Engineering in 1957. They married December 12, 1959 and stayed in Montreal when he moved onto Building Products of Canada in 1961. During that time, they were transferred to Winnipeg and then Edmonton where Fred was born, and then transferred to Guelph Ontario where Joan and John were born. Moving on from that company, dad joined Consumers Glass Company in 1966 and moved into the big city of Etobicoke, where we stayed for the next 46 years. Jennifer joined the family at this time. In 1972 Dad did one of a few stints at Canada Cup, as the VP of Operations. He left there to become his own boss of Marvel Concrete and Tile Products. This lasted a year and then he returned to Canada Cup until 1981 as the EVP & GM. He left then became President and CEO of Wilkinson Sword Canada and the Eddy Match Company and Scripto Pen. Third times a charm when he returned to Canada Cup as President and CEO until his retirement at age 60.

After retirement, he became a Certified Anthony Robbins’ facilitator, due to his passion for business and people, as he eased into retirement. During that time, he became a consultant for UPS in Atlanta and took up a full time career in skiing, curling and baseball.
As a father of four and grandfather of 8, John will be dearly missed by: his loving wife Barbra Leacock Hagerman; Fred and Kristen Hagerman and their children Spencer and Jillian; John and Kelly Hagerman and their children William and Marin Hagerman; Joan Hagerman; and Jennifer Hagerman Longworth and Jim Longworth and their children Jordan, Jamie, Jacqueline and Jack Longworth.

John loved being outdoors. He loved the farm and just on Sunday was talking about our cottage at Mazinaw. He loved the water, all parts of it, swimming, canoeing, sailing, and fishing. But most of all he loved spending time with his family.
