In Celebration of

(John) BARRY POUNTNEY

May 11, 1947 -  September 15, 2018

Died suddenly in the prime of his 71 year life when his heart simply stopped beating. He leaves behind with tremendous sadness his wife, Barbro Stålbecker-Pountney, his many cousins and their families as well as extended family in Sweden and Australia.
Building on the early support provided by his parents, who predeceased him in his early twenties, Barry was able to follow the path of his own choosing. A devoted Buddhist practitioner, an excellent golf player, a skilled Ikebana flower arranger, he was always open to learning more. Barry’s friends are spread throughout the various areas of his life, (including De La Salle alumni and the “Parkdale crowd”— you know who you are). Thank you for the support of family and friends, Riwoche Temple and the Shambhala community. And especially Lama Sonam, Kelsang and Konchuk Lama. And Sensei Lois Orkin, Ikebana master.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., east of the Jane subway, on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Riwoche Tibetan Buddhist Temple, 28 Heintzman Street. For those who wish, donation may be made to your favourite charity in honour of Barry’s memory.

Dear Barb:

We were shocked to learn of Barry's sudden passing. His friendship, kindness, generosity and sense of humour made us richer for knowing him.

Please know that you and Barry are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Barry--I met you through my friendship with Barbro but I considered you my friend by extension. Every interaction with you was warm and personable--thank you. You will be greatly missed by your wife, family and friends. My thoughts are with Barbro during her bereavement--my very sincere condolences.

Very sad to learn of Barry's passing. I've known Barry since 1983 when we both attended a 3 month-long Buddhist seminary led by our first Buddhist teacher. He lived across the hall from me in the hotel that had been rented for the program which led to occasionally hanging out between classes and other events. Later, we both became students of Sonam Rinpoche (Lama Sonam) in Toronto, so our paths crossed and became intertwined again. I'm going to miss his dry humour and kind, gentle presence.

christmas, thanksgiving and summer dinner parties on nora's patio will be a little less interesting now, but I'll always think of Barry when we have cheese and wine before dinner and when i watch the masters in April. You will be missed, cousin Barry!
