In Celebration of

Joanne Currie (nee Tiene)

July 13, 1952 -  April 6, 2022

Joanne passed away on April 6, 2022 at the age of 69.

She was the beloved wife of Philip Currie, devoted mother of Jessica (Mark), Elizabeth (Tyler), Clare (Darryl), and Drew (Deborah), and loving grandmother of Evan, Nora, Bruce, Myles, and Elise.

Joanne was born on Long Island, New York, in the town of Westbury on July 13, 1952, to parents Charles and Dorothy Tiene and raised with siblings Drew, Mary, Gregory, Catherine, Kevin, and Richard. They later moved to South Huntington, where she met Philip at Walt Whitman High School. In 1970, Joanne graduated second in her class (salutatorian) and then attended the University of Michigan, graduating after only three years in a special mathematics program, where she learned computer programming and soon thereafter was hired as a computer programming specialist. Joanne and Phil were married on July 7, 1979, and then relocated to the Toronto area, where they raised their family in the Lorne Park area of Mississauga. Joanne proudly obtained Canadian citizenship in 2008.

Joanne was a true lifelong learner; she loved to explore and had a heart for adventure. In 1977 Phil and Joanne undertook an overland adventure from England to Afghanistan, sparking a lifelong love of travel. In their retirement they travelled the world from Baffin Island and Greenland in the Arctic circle; to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Hong Kong in Asia; Tanzania in Africa; and Brazil, Peru, Chile and the Falkland Islands in South America, almost visiting Antarctica if they weren’t foiled by the weather. Their last trip was a tour of Turkey, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt in February 2020.

Joanne loved sports; often attending figure skating competitions, tennis matches, and making her way to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics to show her pride for Team Canada. She also never missed an opportunity to cheer on her beloved University of Michigan Wolverines.

More than anything else, Joanne savoured time with her family, especially her five grandchildren. She could often be found running around a playground, teaching little ones to swim, playing pretend kitchen, or claiming victory at Uno. It is in these precious family moments where she will be missed the most. Joanne was incredibly giving of her time and affection, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will take place at a later date.

For those who wish, donations may be made in her name to Ronald McDonald House Canada.

Joanne was such an upbeat and full of life person. I still cannot believe she is gone from our lives far too early.
We were looking forward to many more skating adventures - especially the World Skating competition in Montreal in 2024.
We will have to go in Joanne's honour.
My sincere condolences Phil and all Joanne's family whom she loved and cared for very much

Our sincere and deepest condolences on your lost Phil. For the few moments once a year that we met Joanne at the annual Xmas party, we always enjoyed our time with her.

Take care.
