In Celebration of

Joan Serson

April 27, 1941 -  November 27, 2023

On Monday November 27th, 2023, at the age of 82, Winnifred Joan Serson (née McCracken) peacefully went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Joan was the cherished wife for 46 years of the late Eugene Serson (2014), devoted mother of Brent (Jennifer) and loving and proud grandmother of Daniel, Hannah, and Katelyn. She was the third born child of the late Wilfred and Kathleen McCracken (née Bond). She was predeceased by her two older brothers Keith (Audrey) and Maurice (Earlien) and is survived by her younger sister Barbara (late Kerry) and younger brother Brian (Marlene). Joan was a dearly loved sister and sister-in-law, a wonderful daughter-in-law to Ken and Grace Serson, and a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Joan was born in 1941 in Selby, Ontario and grew up on her family farm there. At the age of 18 she followed in her mother’s footsteps and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Camden, Ontario. She quickly discovered a passion for teaching and went on to teach in schools in Kingston, Lethbridge (Alberta), Hamilton, Odessa and Enterprise. She taught for 37 years and was a beloved elementary, kindergarten and special education teacher. While teaching full time she also diligently took night classes at Queen’s University and earned a Bachelor of Education degree. Her love of teaching remained with her throughout her entire life.
Joan married the love of her life, Eugene, in 1968 and they lived in Kingston, Ontario with their son Brent most of their married life. Together they enjoyed hosting others in their home, participating in church activities, serving through various charity organizations and taking trips to see different parts of the world. They especially enjoyed their trip to Israel in 1999 where they were both baptised in the Jordan River. In 2005 Joan and Eugene moved to Brighton by the Bay where they enjoyed their retirement years. After Eugene’s passing in 2014, Joan moved to Mississauga where she enjoyed many happy times with Brent and Jen’s family.
Joan was a caring and kind-hearted person who always took an interest in the lives of others. She had a deep love for her family, a lifelong passion for education, a great appreciation for excellence, and a wonderful sense of humour. She was a good friend and had many friends. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and faith. We will forever miss her bright and gentle spirit and her thoughtful, good-natured ways.

Friends and family will be received at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 1981 Dundas St W, Mississauga, on Saturday, December 9th from 1 to 3 pm.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm at the same location.
Interment will be on Monday, December 11th at 3pm at the Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston, Ontario.

Memorial donations to the Salvation Army or World Vision Canada would be appreciated by the family.
