In Celebration of
Jean (nee Case) Gardhouse
July 29, 1929 -
January 3, 2017
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Gardhouse in her 88th year. Jean died peacefully at Trillium Mississauga Hospital after contracting the flu and pneumonia.
She has gone to join her childhood sweetheart and loving husband, Ross. She will forever be cherished by her children Stephen (Joyce), Carrie (John Ross), the late David (Karen) and Barb (Mike Foley). She was a loving Grandmother to Angela (Nik Krpan), Stephanie (Jim Veenstra), Casey (Matt Bell), Brooke, Alyson (Steve Gunn), Laurel, Sarah (Ledian Mete), Lindsay (Kyle Gerow), Hayden, and Parker. Known as GG (Great Grandma), she will be missed by Natalie, Willem, Gabriel, Izaak, Theodore, and Maxwell. She is survived by her adoring and "elegant" sister Ruth, and her husband Jack Langmaid.
The daughter of Garfield Case and Velma Stewart, Jean grew up in Owen Sound. She had an interesting upbringing as her father served as the Mayor of Owen Sound and then later as the MP for Grey North. She always laughed telling how as a teen she danced at the opening of parliament with Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King.
She loved to share stories about what an idyllic life she had growing up in a small town. In elementary school she met "Roscoe" who would become her husband and the love of her life. They were married for 56 years but a couple for more than 70.
In 1949, she left Owen Sound to attend Nursing school in Kitchener-Waterloo. This past September she attended her 65th class reunion with 13 of her fellow graduates.
In 1953 she and Ross married. After a year in Toronto, where Steve was born, they moved to Sault Ste. Marie where they had Carrie, David, and Barb in just 4 years!. They returned to Toronto where they lived in the same house in Etobicoke for 30 years until Ross’s retirement in 1989. They moved back to Ross’s childhood home in Owen Sound and spent their winters in Florida.
Together they spent countless happy hours golfing and gathering with many dear and lifelong friends. It is a great testament to a life well-lived that she could claim multiple friendships lasting over 80 years.
This summer, when Jean realized she could no longer golf, she announced that she was coming back to the GTA to be closer to her family. She moved into The Beechwood Residence in Mississauga. It was a brief stay but a very happy one.
Jean will be forever loved, remembered, and missed by all.
Friends are invited to celebrate Jean's life on Sunday January 8, 2017 at Turner and Porter - Peel Chapel, - 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga. Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 am followed by a brief service and luncheon.
There will be a celebration and interment in Owen Sound at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you complete an act of kindness in Jean's memory.
