In Celebration of

Jeanne Theresa Sut Tiam Quee

March 26, 1940 -  August 26, 2025

Surrounded by her loving family, Jeanne Theresa Sut Tiam Quee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in her 85th year.

Jeanne was born in Malaysia and discovered her love of learning at an early age. Educated by French and Irish nuns at the Convent School in Kajang and later at Bukit Nanas in Kuala Lumpur, she was inspired by her teachers and worked tirelessly to excel. At 18, she earned a scholarship to Brinsford College in England, her first taste in exploring the world. There she trained to become a teacher at a time when Malaysia was in great need of educators. Upon returning home, she taught first grade at her old Convent School—a full-circle moment.

Jeanne had dreams of seeing the world, having new experiences and meeting new people. She later immigrated to Canada, where she settled in Toronto, and continued her vocation with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, teaching at St. Anthony Catholic School. Jeanne devoted 37 years to teaching, inspiring generations of students with her wisdom, discipline, and care.

Family was always at the heart of Jeanne’s life. The eldest daughter of Khoon Jin and Siew Kiang Quek, she was one of thirteen siblings and played a pivotal role in bringing her brother, Kim Teck, and sister, Ngoh Fooi, to Canada. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews across generations.

Beyond the classroom, Jeanne enjoyed reading, gardening, baking, and sharing her handmade cards and dishes at every family gathering. She was also a loyal friend, adventuring across the city to make sure she stayed in touch and remained connected regularly. She will be remembered for her perseverance, generosity, strength, love of education, legendary baked goods, charismatic storytelling, and her unwavering dedication to family and faith.

Jeanne is predeceased by her long-time partner, Michael Blurton, with whom she is now reunited. She is survived by her brother Kim Teck, sister Ngoh Fooi, sister-in-law Kim Yong, her extended family in Malaysia and Singapore, and the countless students, colleagues, and friends whose lives she touched.

A visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (corner of Bloor and Windermere) on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025, from 2pm until 3pm, and a funeral service to follow at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Poppit & Pat Rogers (friends)

Entered August 30, 2025 from London UK

I (Pat) first met Jeanne in the Singapore YWCA when she and Poppit were resident there, around 1965. Poppit and I left Singapore perhaps a couple of years later and ended up in Guelph, Ontario. Then Jeanne immigrated and through a mutual Chinese friend we found each other again. We got along famously and invaded her house in Woodside not infrequently. She was a delightful hostess and we remember her measured methodical ways with great fondness. She first visited us in Guelph coming on the bus which evidently made many stops - "it was sooo slow" she reported on arrival! "I asked the driver to please go faster, but it was sooo slow!". She and Poppit got on like a house on fire, bursting with laughs and giggles. Around 1980 work took us away from Canada ending up in France; we last saw her perhaps 15 or 20 years ago in Etobicoke. She had not changed and we delighted in each others' company just the same. I am sure it won't change when we join her again.

Auntie Jeanne is the beloved aunt of our daughter in law, Christina Quek-Slipacoff. Although we only met her a few times, we knew how loved and respected she was by the entire family through the many stories we have been told of her life accomplishments….and baking skills. She will be deeply missed and always in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Our condolences to all of the Quek family at this sad time.

Miyuki Hamade (Friend from Jeanne’s place lived)

I miss Jeanne very much.

Mary Sullivan-Tate (Teaching Partner, Neighbour and Friend)

Entered September 2, 2025 from Peterborough and Ottawa

Jeanne was a wonderful friend. My husband and I dropped in to visit her on her 85th birthday in March. We had a wonderful visit with her. Even though we had not seen her in several years she still looked the same. Several years earlier we lived on the same street as her and enjoyed being her neighbour. We also loved eating her delicious pecan pies! I also had a lot of fun teaching with her at St. Anthony’s School in Toronto. Jeanne you will be truly missed. My condolences to the family.

I met Jeanne through Virginia del Pozo, a resident in our building some 15 years ago, and later met Michael and Donna. We would meet a few times each year, but unfortunately, our group has grown smaller. I will miss Jeanne's energy.
