In Celebration of
Janina Chajczyk
May 10, 1929 -
March 18, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janina Chajczyk (Bondyra) on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Trillium Health Partners- Mississauga, in her 94th year.
She was born in Wierzbie (Powiat Zamojski) Poland, the third of 4 children on May 10, 1929. Her world changed with the outbreak of WWII. Her family was separated when Janina, her mother and younger brother were taken to Germany in 1942. Fortunately, they were assigned to work in the country. She often recounted hearing the Allied bombers over Stuttgart. After the war ended she spent 3 years in a Displaced Persons Camp in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany.
As a young single woman, Janina arrived in Montreal in 1948. The Canadian emigration policy allowed DPs to work their contracts and then receive landed immigration status. Janina was forever grateful for this policy stating “Canada accepted us, we came with 10 fingers willing to work and we made a new life”.
With the money she saved and the assistance of her “contract” family she was able to sponsor her mother and brother to join her in Canada where the 3 formed a strong family unit. As was the case for many families after the Communist takeover of Poland, her father, sister and brother remained in Poland. In 1949 she married Feliks Chajczyk a fellow DP and the Canadian branch of the family expanded. Together they built a new life in Canada, where they raised 2 daughters and were active in the Polish community in Lachine.
They emigrated one more time to Mississauga to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. A talented seamstress, cook and baker, we treasure our memories of family celebrations and visits. Janina is now reunited with her late husband Feliks (2014), her parents Jan (1973) and Maria (1998), sister Stanisława (2014), brothers Paweł (2020) and Marian (2015). She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Uleryk (Richard) and Diane Krompart (Wray). She was the proud babcia of Michael (Crystal), David (Sarah) and Annmarie. She was an ecstatic prababcia of little Felix. She will be missed by her sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in Montreal, Poland and the U.S.
The family would like to thank the staff at Beechwood Place and Court where Janina resided since 2018 for their care. We are very grateful for the compassionate care and kindness she received from Dr. Zheng, and the nursing and support staff on 6J (THP-M) during her final illness. You made a difficult time bearable.

Wieczny odpoczynek racz jej dać, Panie, a światłość wiekuista niechaj jej świeci. Niech odpoczywa w pokoju wiecznym. Amen.
Eternal rest grant her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in eternal peace. Amen.
