In Celebration of

Janet Lewis

December 26, 1944 -  May 6, 2019

Dear Janet passed away peacefully from cancer at Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto on May 6, 2019.
Janet was born December 26, 1944 to Gertrude and Luther Lewis in Carmarthen, South Wales, U. K. The family later moved to Morfa Nevyn in North Wales. Janet had very fond memories of her childhood in Morfa Nevyn and, with a large number of relatives in Carmarthen, always enjoyed visiting family as well as her friends when in the U.K.

Janet was awarded a scholarship to Liverpool University to study medicine but instead chose University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, to study mathematics, graduating with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. Her university friends remained a very important part of her life and, over the years, visits and reunions were arranged with these and other close friends. Fran, Val, Bron, June, Pam, Pauline, Helen, Trish, Rob and Lesley, Hywel, John, Delia and Pauline were always in her heart.

In 1968 Janet joined the London, England office of accounting firm Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., (later KPMG). She was the first woman to article with that office, qualifying in 1971 as a Chartered Accountant.
In 1973 Janet immigrated to Canada working with KPMG in Toronto and later, as Financial Planning Manager with Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. She subsequently moved to Montreal as Treasurer of Via Rail Canada Inc., a significant position for a woman at that time.

Janet returned to Toronto in 1989 and continued her career in finance as an independent consultant providing services to corporations and non-profit charities. In 2001, and to the current period, she provided services to the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation. Whilst there, she much enjoyed the work and friendships, and was very grateful to that organization for its support, understanding and assistance during the past three difficult years.

Janet enjoyed travel, cycling, yoga and Performance and Fine Arts and the friendships at Dewi Sant Welsh United Church in Toronto. She also volunteered at North York General Hospital, Humbervale Day Centre for Seniors and the Disabled, and the Daily Bread Food Bank. Her true joy was her love for her dogs and cats over the years. Molly, Grady, Merlin, Lujah, Venus were all remembered and Theo, her friendly cat, lives on and will be very happy in his new home.

Janet had wonderful care at PMH and wished to thank Dr. Kathy Han, Dr. Amit Oza and his team, Ashley Patterson and the nursing staff for the attention she received.

Donations in memory of Janet to the Etobicoke Humane Society, The Dorothy Ley Hospice or to a charity of your choice would be much appreciated. Following cremation, gatherings for a celebration of Janet’s life will be held in Toronto at Turner & Porter, Yorke Chapel, Bloor and Windermere (416-767-3153), June 26, 2019 at 11 a.m. and, at a later date, in Wales, U.K. Online condolences available at www.turnerporter.ca
