It is with profound sadness and loving memories that our family announces the passing of Jan Zasowski who left us peacefully in his 95th year on March 14th 2017. Born in Niwiska Poland, on June 10th 1922, Jan grew up in a family of 8. He survived the war and came to Toronto in 1949 having been sponsored by his brother-in-law. He worked at the Royal York Hotel when it was the tallest building in the downtown core. He returned to Poland after 12 years to meet the love of his life, Karolina Dluzen. They married in 1958 and Karolina joined Jan in Toronto six months later. They would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this August 10th.

Jan and Karolina had three children, John (Krystyna) and Julie (Ronald Roy), having lost one son at birth. Jan became a loving grandfather to ten; Andrew, Teresa (Daniel Ostapowicz), Victoria (Oleh Marianchuk), Elizabeth, Mark, Lindsay, Clare, Lucas, Ania, Bernadette and a recent great grandfather to Laura and Sophie.

Jan was always helping his family in any way he could. His favourite pastimes included dancing, gardening, and most of all spending time with family and friends (human and four-legged). Jan was always the consummate host ready to welcome and celebrate company with a drink and always happy to have a game cards (Tysiac) and much to Ron’s chagrin, beating him regularly.

Jan was a quiet, humble, loyal and gentle man. He valued everyone equally and unconditionally and left us with a legacy to aspire to.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks to Kasia Bullock, Jan's niece and nurse, for her outstanding and loving care. We thank Dr. Drzymala and all of the staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre for their skilled and compassionate care. Thank you to Father Tadeusz Porzuczek for his spiritual care.
