In Celebration of

James Gordon Hynes

July 7, 1940 -  June 6, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of Jim Hynes in his 83rd year. Beloved husband to Carol Lynne for 59 years and father to Patrick (Jill) and Rob (Andrea) and proud Grandad to Maxwell, Charlotte and Benjamin. Jim is survived by two sisters, Kay (John Palkhivala) and Eleanor and brother Grant (Barb).

Jim was born and raised in Montréal before a move to Toronto in 1972. Though he spent fifty years in the city, he remained a Montréaler at heart, often sarcastically talking about “Toronto the Good” and staunchly supporting his Canadiens and Alouettes. He did, however, grow very fond of Toronto’s High Park, which he lived next to for many years, and spent countless hours riding his bicycle in the summer and skating on Grenadier Pond in the winter.

A writer by trade, Jim had a passion for music, playing the piano and recorder; loved sailing, which he had done since childhood; enjoyed a good single malt Scotch; and was a skilled artist, but it was his family, above all, that brought him joy and happiness.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Jim was a dear, and much valued, friend of mine for many years. I got to know him when Ethos Magazine co-existed with Burns Cooper Hynes. Over the years Jim and I met at pubs in Toronto to sustain our friendship. I will always fondly remember Jim.

I had the privilege of working with Jim at Burns Cooper Hynes from 1979-1982.

One of the things that we shared was a love of writing, and I enjoyed many a conversation with Jim on subjects of literary interest. He had such a gift for the pointed turn of phrase, a quality I greatly enjoyed, admired and attempted to emulate (rather unsuccessfully, I might add. You either have it or you don't).

I remember one quip in particular, about being a famous designer (as were both his partners Robert and Heather): "It's an obscure kind of fame. . ."

He encouraged me to write, and I took him up on that in my forties. That decision saved my career, as I have been writing ever since and now do it full time. So I owe Jim a great measure of gratitude for his encouragement.

My condolences to Carol Lynne and the whole family.
