Jacob is preceded in death by his parents, three siblings and his beloved wife Aleyamma. He is survived by his son Jerry, daughter Jessica, son-in-law Ron and grandkids Adam (Rayva) and Rachel (Kamron) and his brother K.C. Elias. Additionally, he is survived by Aleyamma’s siblings: Achamma (Thomas), Mathew (Rachel), Mary (Varghese - deceased), Leela -deceased (Joseph), Jacob (Leelamma), Varghese (Amu), Benny - deceased (Jo) and Joy. Aleyamma’s family became his nuclear family in Canada, until his last days. They gave him and Aleyamma love, strength and support through all the challenges of life.
Jacob was born in Kerala, India to Chacko and Mariamma Kuzhikkattil. He was the fourth of five children. His family owned several acres of coconut groves and rubber plantations. It was the countryside known for its bushy green fields and idyllic happiness. Growing up, Jacob was known for his love of sports - playing cricket, field hockey and running track. He received many trophies and accolades for his competitive wins.
Jacob graduated from Madras University with a degree in economics and immediately joined the finance and sales organization of Hindustan Steel, working in Madras. After marrying Aleyamma in1965, they moved to Calcutta as Jacob’s career had progressed at Hindustan Steel, elevating him to a corporate position.
In 1969 Jacob and Aleyamma made the difficult decision to leave India and immigrate to Canada. They joined Aleyamma’s sister and brother-in-law, Achamma and Thomas, in Canada. It was an opportunity and a dream for a better life. They lived in Toronto for several years, initially with Achamma and Thomas, and then in their own home. In 1977, they built their family home in Mississauga which they lived in for the next 41 years.
Jacob enjoyed time with his kids helping with homework and taking them to their activities – ice skating, ballet, piano lessons and soccer matches. He lived the immigrant dream to do all that was possible for his kids to have success and prosperity.
In Canada, Jacob worked for the Metro Toronto Police Department. During his time in the force, he worked in the Kensington Market district. He made friends with several of the small business shopkeepers and owners. They shared stories of their homeland and the challenges of raising a family in a new country. Jacob retired after 24 years of distinguished service with the Toronto Police.
In retirement, Jacob enjoyed his daily morning walks in Square One where he and Aleyamma made several close friends enjoying weekly lunches together. He was an avid gardener and spent countless hours growing vegetables and caring for his flower gardens. Jacob and Aleyamma were able to travel the world in retirement visiting such places as the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, the Taj Mahal, the Vatican and the Holy Land in Jerusalem. Additionally, they travelled to Kerala many times to visit with family and friends.
Jacob adored his grandchildren, Adam and Rachel. They shared a love for soccer. While travelling with the kids in Europe in 2006, they were able to watch the World Cup matches in each capitol they visited – London, Paris, and Rome – especially fun was watching the Italians win it all in Rome! Additionally, Jacob passed on his passion for fitness to Adam and Rachel. They would be in awe of his daily morning calisthenics which would culminate in a headstand. Jacob would proudly introduce his grandkids to everyone as my “grandson the doctor” and my “granddaughter the lawyer”. He was very happy to be alive to see his grandchildren get married and spend time with their spouses.
Jacob and Aleyamma were founding members of St. Mary’s Church. Jacob held several executive positions on the Church committee and was instrumental in the planning process for the expansion of the Church. In addition to opening their home to new immigrant families from Kerala, Jacob and Aleyamma also hosted Church Bishops when they visited the province. They always looked forward to attending the weekly church service and spending time with their Church family. The Church and faith were an extremely important part of their lives.
Jacob’s last few years were spent caring for Aleyamma until her passing in 2023. He is now at peace, reunited with Aleyamma, and in the hands of the Lord.
