In Celebration of

Indra Gubins

August 8, 1927 -  December 12, 2017

During the first snowflakes of the year and below the stars of midnight, Indra died of sudden cardiac arrest on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

Born in Livberze, Latvia in 1927, she enjoyed celebrating her 90th birthday this past summer with family and friends. Due to WWII, she had fled her homeland, spending time in Germany and the UK before ending up in Canada together with her husband Gunars Gubins (1925-1987.)

Indra was the first in her family to achieve an undergraduate degree in Art History and later went on to receive a Masters in Library Science. A renowned Latvian writer, poet and art critic, she penned 27 novels and was a librarian for the Art Gallery of Toronto and the Art History department of the University of Toronto.

She leaves behind her cherished sister, Biruta Skujins; her son, Arnis Gubins; his wife Inese Grava-Gubins; and beloved granddaughter, Brigita. She also leaves her daughter Nora Gubins, and her husband Stephen Sweeting. There are many other relatives in Canada and abroad who will dearly miss Indra.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere (east of the Jane subway), on Friday December 15, 2017 from 4-8 p.m with service at 7:30 p.m. Interment on Saturday December 17, 2017 at York Cemetery at 11 a.m.

donations to the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto welcomed.

Arnis:
I happened to be in Toronto ( from Florida) and noted your mother's passing. I do appreciate how family oriented you always were and how proud you were of her and of your own family. Please know I care and often recall how very helpful you were and how proud of Brigita. Pat Sheahan
