In Celebration of

Horst Oelschlegel

January 7, 1936 -  December 16, 2025

It is with sad hearts that we share the passing of Horst who died peacefully at the age of 89 years. Born in Amberg Germany, the youngest of six children, Horst emigrated to Canada in June 1957 with the intention to go on to America but met the love of his life Irene at church in Toronto, and decided to stay.

Horst was a cherished husband to Irene for 65 years, who predeceased him in September 2024.

A loving father to Karin (Frank), Opi to Katie (Andrew), Matthew (Meghan) and Luke (Amy) and great Opi to Nicolas, Ella, William, Jake, Lauren and Callahan.

Horst will be remembered for his deep faith and his love for the church he attended. He was a math teacher with the Scarborough school board who continually did studies to increase his knowledge in theology. After he retired mission work in Africa, Russia and Mexico became a passion as well as pleasure travel to Europe and many other destinations with Irene. Summers at the cottage up north became a happy second home where many special family times were shared.

We are comforted that Horst is now with Irene in heaven and with his Lord whom he loved.

A memorial service will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, January 30, 2026 at 11:00 am with a reception to follow.

I have found memories of him in so many ways: our time on Elders, the bike hikes etc. Such a faithful man.

I received a telephone call yesterday from a friend, expressing Christmas wishes and New Year's blessings when she mentioned the passing of your loved one. I didn't know of his passing and wanted to express my condolences to you as a family. He is in the arms of our Lord and reunited with loved ones that have passed on before him.
Thoughts and prayers go to the entire family in your time of mourning.

Karin, Frank and family we want you to know that we continue to pray for you all as you mourn the loss of your dad, father-in-law, Opa and ‘Great-Opa’. As you well know that Horst’s love for the Lord was strong and now he has arrived and is living without pain or any other struggles. May that knowledge help you through this sad time of mourning .

We, very much appreciated Horst and his God given talents at church. He was a dedicated and involved member, who gave freely at serving the Lord at Humbervale Park and beyond its walls. He served as children’s Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, Board member and Elder. Horst also taught adult Bible Classes and put forth a great deal of effort. When our church was built, he was mainly responsible for installing the large drop ceiling in the sanctuary at Humbervale Park. He was motivated and energized who will be missed. Our loss is heaven’s gain.

Sending our love and hugs,
Doris and Lothar
