In Celebration of

Heather Cartwright

March 15, 1943 -  April 24, 2017

Heather Cartwright, 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 24, 2017. Beloved wife of Dennis for 50 years. Loving mom of Gaylen (Bert) Silva, Meredith (Paul) Darch & Carrie (Chet) Fletcher. Cherished & proud Nana of Christian, Jacob, Sarah, Adam, Tait, Logan & Brody. Predeceased by parents Bill & Rhoda Kenwright, sister Betty, brother Bob, nephew Charlie & brother-in-law Bob Baldwin. Loved by sister-in-law Marg, nieces Lee, Wendy & Lesley & nephew Jonathan & her many cousins. Dear friend of so many, including from public school, high school, teaching, church, golf & her Toronto & Florida neighbourhoods.

Heather attended Runnymede Collegiate Institute & kept in close contact with her circle of school friends, playing bridge, having barbeques & supporting each other as families grew & life events happened.

Heather taught grade one at Silver Creek Public School in Etobicoke & continued to connect with her teaching colleagues. She was then able to stay at home to greet her girls at lunch & after school, support their extra-curricular activities & volunteer in the community, including Brownies & the Arthritis Society. Many friends were made through her neighbourhood & volunteer activities.

Heather returned to teaching as her girls were more independent. She re-engaged with her passion first through supply teaching & then with a permanent position at Second Street School in Etobicoke. She shaped so many young children & received the Community Member Award for providing DNA evidence that allowed Toronto Police to solve the murder of her student Farah Khan.

When Dennis retired, Heather reluctantly gave up teaching so they could spend winters in Florida, with their Wisteria Pointe friends, summers at Heather’s beloved family cottage, surrounded by cousins, & enjoy international travel in the fall, making it to every continent save Antarctica. They had caught the travel bug following several wonderful holidays with friends & family in Canada, the US, the Caribbean & Europe.

Heather was involved in UCW activities at Humber Valley & St. Luke’s United Churches for over 45 years & more recently appreciated community at Islington United Church. She also enjoyed her golf membership at Lambton Golf & Country Club. Those connections led to many close friends who share wonderful memories.

Thanks to all the medical staff at Trillium Health Partners, Queensway & Mississauga, who cared for Heather over the past year.

Visitation will be held on Wed May 3 from 2-4 & 6-9pm at Turner & Porter Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, L5B 1M8. Service at 11:00 am at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd, Toronto, M9A 3C1, on Thurs May 4 followed by reception. As a tribute to Heather, the family requests that you remember her vibrant spirt by wearing something colourful as we celebrate her life.

In memory donations to Trillium Health Partners Foundation for Cancer or Humber Valley United Church Foundation are appreciated.

To those who loved and were loved by Mrs. Cartwright, I offer you my deepest condolences. Those we love don't ever truly go away, they walk beside always. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and forever remembered. May your memories of her be rooted in all you've shared, and may her love for each of you provide comfort during this difficult time.

Heather and I began teaching together at Silver Creek many years ago. The Creekers will miss hearing about her wonderful trips abroad, her daughters and grandkids at our reunions. She was a great organizer and a generous friend. We will miss her.

I'm so sorry to hear of Heather's passing. As you know, I was in your house practically every day growing up, and I also had the privilege to go up to the cottage every summer. I have so many wonderful memories growing up with the Cartwrights. Heather always treated me as one of her own, and I still remember so many things that she said and did. I really appreciate everything that she (and Dennis) did for me. My thoughts are with the family. I’m sorry that I can’t come back for the funeral.
