After a courageous year-long battle with esophageal cancer Harry Tideman lost the fight on Sunday, February 8, at the age of 65. He faced his illness with grit, grace, and his trademark sense of humour.
Harry was a devoted husband to Cindy, and an incredibly proud father to Drake (Kristina) and Alandra, and was a cherished brother, uncle and loyal friend to many. If you met Harry there is a good chance you remembered him, and an even better chance he made you laugh.
Born in Orangeville, Ontario, he was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Ethel, and his sisters Vicki and Carol. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Wendy, with whom he shared a particularly special bond.
Harry was the co-owner of Presentation Plus with his wife Cindy, where his hard work, and people-first approach were evident to all who knew him. He generously volunteered as manager of Drake’s hockey team, the Mississauga Braves, a role he took on with dedication, organization and good humour, purely for the love of the game and the kids.
When his kids were young, Harry was rarely seen without a video camera in hand, faithfully capturing Drake on the ice or at the baseball diamond, and Alandra riding horses or playing hockey, always front row and always beaming. He was endlessly proud of his children and never missed a chance to brag about them.
Harry loved a good game of euchre or backgammon, though his skills were, by his own admission, mediocre at best. Still, enthusiasm counted for a lot, and he always played with a smile and a joke ready.
Harry was a great neighbour, generously spending countless winter hours snowplowing the neighbourhood and looking out for everyone around him. Eventually, the sun won. In later years, Harry’s heart belonged to Costa Rica, where he happily traded snowbanks for beaches, spending his days soaking up the sun or sailing under blue skies.
Quick with a joke, generous with his time, and full of heart, Harry lived fully and loved deeply. He leaves behind countless stories that will continue to be told, often with laughter.
Wherever he is now, he is probably shuffling the cards or breaking out the backgammon board. Best of all, he is finally somewhere warm and sunny and blissfully free of snowbanks, shovels and snowplows, which he would agree is exactly how it should be.
