In Celebration of

Harry Douglas Campbell

June 7, 1926 -  June 17, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Harry Douglas Campbell.

Harry was born on June 7, 1926, in Burtch Ontario and passed away on June 17, 2023, in Mississauga Ontario. He was the youngest child of Cecil Thomas Campbell (1980) and Fanny Anna Roberts (1992), born in the family farmhouse that still stands today. Loving husband of 68 years to Betty Jane Sutherland (D:2019) and father to his three darling daughters, Carol Miller (David D:2013), Catherine Johnstone, and Connie Ford (John). He had seven lovely grandchildren, Jennifer, Melanie, Stephanie, Kyle, Cheryl, Colleen, John (D:2005), Jeffrey and Matthew, and twelve great grand children. He had a very strong love for his late wife Betty, his three loving daughters, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Growing up on the Campbell family farm, Harry attended Burtch Public School and Brantford Collegiate. He had a passionate love for cars from the time he was a small boy and always took special care of his cars.

Following high school, Harry enrolled in a 5-year apprenticeship in auto mechanics at Kett Motors, the Brantford Chrysler dealership. In the 5th year of apprenticeship, he attended Ryerson Institute of Technology Toronto and graduated with 98% on the final exam and was awarded the Garage Operations Associate award for outstanding achievement in automotive studies.

In 1950 Harry and Betty were married and settled in a home on Dundee Street in Brantford.

In 1956 Harry joined Chrysler Canada and moved with his family to Toronto as a District Service Manager in the Ontario Region. During his 46 years in the car business, Harry enrolled in several training courses at the Chrysler Institute in Detroit and the Dale Carnegie Leadership in Toronto. Harry graduated from Dale Carnegie class in 1962 and was awarded by the class to be Graduate Assistant for the next Dale Carnegie class.

During the summer months the family spent many fun filled weeks at the cottage in Foot’s Bay, Lake Joseph. Harry wanted to see Canada and in 1967 the family travelled to Expo 67 and then on to the East Coast. In 1968 the family travelled to the west coast. In 1969 they travelled to the Grand Canyon. Oh, the stories three kids in the backseat could tell from those travels.

Following retirement Betty and Harry travelled to Britain, Europe, car trips around north America, walked the great wall of China, and spent several winters in Fort Myers Florida. They also enjoyed several cruises in the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Hawaii, and Alaska.

Harry was a member of Burtch Baptist Church as a child, Rexdale United Church during their time in Toronto, and then Erindale United in Mississauga where he was an active member into his early 90’s. Long time Sunday School teacher and superintendent, usher, council member, dad was always willing to volunteer his time.
He was the best dad, grandfather, great grandfather, that a kid could ever ask for. He loved his girls and was always there for us. He was the taxi driver that was always available to drive a group of giggling girls to any activity and pick us up when it was over. He drove girl guides and brownies to camp and was always in the front few rows at the numerous piano and dancing recitals, plays, school activities and graduations. He was the most dependable and loving dad that a kid could ever imagine. He was the perfect dad.

We would like to thank the staff at the Villages of Erin Meadows for their amazing care of our dad for the past 2+ years. The team on the Assisted Living Floor that assisted dad and his daughters through the past couple of months and the staff of the Independent Living floors for 2 years. You will never know how much we appreciate the loving and compassionate care that you provided to our father and everything that you did for his family.

We would also like to especially thank Janice Burtcher, Nurse Practitioner in the Credit Valley Heart Clinic and Dr. Lee of One Heart Care. Thank you for caring so much about our father and for giving us 3 more amazing years with the best dad ever.

Visitation will take place on Monday, June 26, 2023 at 10 am at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, Ontario, followed by a funeral service at 11 am, followed by a reception.

Private interment at Glen Oaks Cemetery will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
