In Celebration of

George Samuel Carpenter

January 1, 1930 -  March 24, 2021

The family of Sam (Red) Carpenter are saddened to announce his passing at the Credit Valley Hospital on March 24, 2021at the age of 91. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 66 years, Anne (Van Wart), and his daughters, Patricia Eastman (Bob) and Jill van Veen (Andy). Sam was the devoted and much loved grandfather of Adam (Rachelle) and Tom Eastman, and of Megan and Erin van Veen. In recent years, he had celebrated the birth of two great-granddaughters, Avery and Kinsley Eastman. Sam will also be missed by his sister Barbara Faulkner and niece Kate St. Aubin as well as many friends.

Born in Montreal, Sam graduated from West Hill High School, The Royal Canadian Naval College, Royal Roads and McGill University. He was a Chartered Accountant working in Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto.

Sam enjoyed sailing, spending time with friends and family, computing, and traveling - especially annual family trips to Kennebunkport, Maine. He will be remembered for his sharp wit and enjoyment of discussions of current events.

The family would like to thank the staff of Amica Erin Mills and CBI Home Health for the care provided during Sam’s final years as well as the staff of the Credit Valley Hospital for caring for him in his final days.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a private family memorial is being scheduled.

Donations in Sam’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Fond memories of our time together at Shaw Industries, with trips to Huntsville, Board meeting minutes and drafting annual reports etc.
Also, my gratitude to Sam for his support and consideration when it was time to move on.
Whenever I hear “Suivant - Next”, it reminds me of good times with Sam.

I met Sam in the early 60's when he first hired me in Montreal - the beginning of a life-long friendship. Fond memories of our after-work evening visits to Expo 67 where on one memorable occasion Sam "borrowed" a Police vehicle to transport us to various pavilions. Around 1972 Sam, Anne and his daughters and I and my future wife (and Sam's former Amanuensis, as Sam referred to her) Donna ended up in Vancouver with different employers where our friendship continued, then later at Shaw Industries working together again. During our early association in Montreal, Sam took what I considered to be risky decisions in allowing me to take on responsibilities that I lobbied for, and I have always been grateful to him for taking those chances with me. Fond memories of Donna and I "babysitting" Patricia and Jill in Vancouver while Sam and Anne went on vacation. And memories of Sam's friend, Jimmy the dachshund, who didn't care for me or the speakers on the rear parcel shelf of Sam's car. A sense of humour like nobody I've ever known. Many occasions on his sailboat on Lake Ontario - he loved sailing. So many great memories with Sam - however friendship disappeared during business hours - which I admit irked me at times. During recent years we held our bi-weekly or sometimes monthly OFL (Old Farts Lunch) with a couple of Sam's old buddies and Vern Bennett, and we always were able to solve most of the world's problems. COVID-19 brought an end to those lunches along with some health issues. I really miss those lunches with Sam and friends - Sam's sense of humour was as sharp then as it was in the 60's - a very funny guy. Sam was very proud of his daughters Patricia and Jill and their husbands and kids. We would always get the family low-down at every OFL on how Anne and the girls really looked after him. His first great grandchild was a highlight - at one OFL he went around showing servers her picture. I could write a book on my life with Sam - I'm missing Sam so much. Sam, I think you kept Minutes of our OFL meetings so we will pick up where we left off when we meet again. Brian
